Why is the British Open Called ‘the Open’?

I’m not even sure that’s a question worth answering because it’s a clear ploy by the Brits in an attempt to put their major championship on a pedestal higher than the other 3. To me it ranks 3rd as it’s less epic than the Masters, and not as difficult of conditions to play and win as the US Open. But I digress, thoughts from the (British) Open, round 1:
-Apparently Phil Mickelson is not afraid of pink (can’t find a pic yet), as I originally thought. He is just afraid to play well in pink as he sits 9 shots off the pace after 11 holes. Still time to play, Lefty, I’m always a fan.
-John Daly: a classic first round today. Let’s go through the checklist. Crazy designed purple pants? Check. Great score? I’d say a 66 will do. How about lipping out 4 putts late in the round to miss a shot at a record 62? Of course JD (as Tiger so eloquently calls him) can tilt during a great round. As always, the sentimental pick moving forward.
-Tiger cruised to an opening round 67. Obviously that puts him back in contention – and back as the greatest person in the world. Who else could do that after his wife abandoned him…?
-Is Scott Van Pelt becoming nauseously annoying to anyone else? If smugness doesn’t resonate from that guy, I don’t know what does.
