Tiger Talk, A Day Later

Tiger Talk, A Day Later

Following the most talked about sports press conference perhaps since Magic’s HIV/retirement announcement, the long road to recovery for Tiger Woods continues.  In a controlled, rehearsed, and all-eyes-on-me enviornment (words that can describe Tiger’s professional career, too), Tiger offered the world a quick apology….and that was just about it.

Tiger’s talk of self blame, sex rehab, and brief mention of no notion as to when he’s coming back to the tour was all part of the game.  He had to play to the media, he had to say those things.  It made him appear to have his priorities right, putting golf on the backburner for now.  But a man who has stood in front of a camera for most of his life couldn’t deliver a fluid speech?  One that was written and rehearsed several times?  One that is suppose to be a speech of truth?  Naw, I’m not buying it.

I have followed Tiger’s career too long - back to when he was fist pumping around the course to 3 straight US Amateurs – to know what his true ambition is: sinking Jack’s record.  It’s been the number one thing he has talked about his whole professional career, including post-marriage and kids.  Tiger will get that record because it’s his ambition to do so.  And as we all know, his ambition ranks right up there with Jordan’s, so you know that day will come.

The real truth is that Tiger knows exactly when he’s coming back.  He may want to save his marriage, hence the rehab/months of silence, but I honestly think if he had to choose the record or marriage, it would be the record.  He is smart enough to know that with a combination of an apology and 5 more major titles, he will be back on top of the sporting world as a beloved athlete.  Right where he wants to be.

(Google has cool pics, so I lifted them from there)
