Big…Big…Big day of racing today at Gulfstream Park. A lot of Derby contending horses run today as they battle it out for who will get the chance to run in the greatest race in the world. My last 2 posts of picks were washed away by the rains in So Cal so with it sunny in Florida you can all but guarantee we will have racing. So my plays tomorrow will be a daily double in races 7 and 8 and a pick 3 in races 9-11. I’m liking a lot of price so the profits will be large if I hit.

(Races) 7,8 (Wager) Dailey Double (Cost) $20

Race 7: To start off the daily double is one of the Derby prep races. So not only is it a key race for betting today, but could lead to better betting come Derby day. I’m going with the 2 horse Switch. Switch is a So Cal horse shipped out to Florida to try the dirt for the first time and in a lot of cases horses that run good on the synthetic surface run even better on dirt. Also in his last race he got 3rd to early Derby favorite Blind Luck and the stretch out to a mile and an eighth wont be a problem. The only problem I see is the 5 horse Amen Hallelujah, who like Switch is a So Cal horse with one huge difference. He just raced on this dirt surface a couple weeks ago and ripped off a 100 beyer and a 6 length win (This is one of the cases I was talking about). So if you want to hedge your bet a little bit take him also but expect a lot lower payouts considering hes 8/5 unlike Switch who’s 4-1.

Race 8: Here’s the race that will make this daily double payout so big. The sleeper in this race is the 1 Bambera. At 8-1 he will be paying out like the other long shots will but he has one huge difference over them. In 18 career races he has 16 wins. Now all of them were in Venezuela but his wins were huge. Also he is a front runner who is cutting back in distance so he should have plenty in the tank. If his odds stay anywhere close to 8-1 this is the perfect race to hammer a huge win bet. If this bet hits be looking at making some really good money off it.

(Races) 9-11 (Wager) Pick 3 (cost) $9 (I’ll play it for $4 for a total of $36)

Race 9: Hopefully having just cleanup after that daily double we will be able to free roll this bet plus have some walking around money in our pocket. I start the first leg of the pick 3 taking 3 horses. The 3 Kiss the Kid, 7 Rahy’s Attorney and the 9 Almoradi. The first 2 are the 2 favorites and should be with the class level they are above the others, but the 9 is the one I’m hoping comes up big as a 8-1 long shot. He’s only raced once in the US but ran a big 4th place and should be able to improve off that.

Race 10: The 10th is the second of the Derby prep races and offers up the best single of the card by far. The 7 D’Funnybone looms as a potential monster come Derby day and in this race should be able to win running backwards. If you toss his one effort on synthetic (It doen’t go both ways from dirt to snyth) he has the 3 top race figures and put him at a distance that he loves (7 furs) he should romp. Just don’t hope for huge pay day because he’s mourning line fav at 6-5.

Race 11: Race 11 ends with the running of the Florida Derby which is a key race that most handicappers look at when looking at the Derby picks. The winner here is pretty much locked to get into the Derby and also will probably produce a couple other Derby runners. For my bet I’ll be taking 3 horses. The 2 Lentenor, 8 Ice Box and 9 Miner’s Revenge. I’ll start by talking about the 2 Lentenor and if he somehow gets into the Derby he will be talked about more than any other horses. Why? Because he just happens to be a full brother to Derby Winner Barbaro. If you remember Barbaro won the 2006 Derby by a whopping 6 1/2 lengths, till he fractured his leg at the Preakness and had to be put down. But for his bro’s sake I hope he’s just a beast. As for the other 2 I’m playing the Trainer angle and going with legend Nick Zitos 2 entries. The 8 Ice Box is out of one of my favorite sires in Pulpit and should be chasing down the speed horses late. And the 9 Miner’s Revenge has only had 2 races, but his last race he got a 94 and being a Mineshaft bred horse should like the extra distance. Also these 3 are mourning line odds of 6-1, 15-1 and 6-1 so beating favs equals more winnings.

For anyone who played my picks today you know that I had the worst beats I’ve ever had in betting horses. First my 8-1 lock tore her tendon at the start of the race and she got last. Then to top all that off got 2nd and 3rd in the pick 3 then hit the lock then came home with the 20-1 horse. Pick 3 paid $365. Brutal luck
