A week after the Floyd Mayweather/ Shane Mosley fight was announced they have announced another monster fight. On April 3rd Roy Jones Jr will fight the “Executioner” Bernard Hopkins. Now for boxing fans like me when hearing about this fight we got all excited because prior to this whole Paquiao verse Mayweather fight this would have been the real super fight. I mean these two fighters were the premier fighters of the 90′s and early 2000′s. Roy Jones was named fighter of the decade for the 90′s and has held titles in 4 different weight classes, while Hopkins was the first fighter to retain all 4 major boxing governing body belts. If this fight would have happened just 5 years ago we would have been comparing it to Ali/Foreman and Hagler/Hearns and it probably would have been the biggest grossing fight of all time. So even with these fighters both being in their 40′s (Jones 41 and Hopkins 45) we can still expect an exciting fight between to legends of boxing. Now if you think that this fight has no meaning and they are both just doing it for a paycheck I’ll drop a little history on you. These two have fought once before over 17 years ago, and it wasn’t just some garden variety fight this was a stepping stone fight for both fighters. At the time this fight was both fighters first ever title fight for the IBF Middleweight belt, and with it the winner would be thrust into the boxing spotlight while the other would have to start over to get another shot. Jones beat Hopkins in 12 rounds by unanimous decision in a close fight and from their Jones started his reign as the pound for pound best fighter while Hopkins had to wait 2 years for another shot. If you think that Hopkins isn’t going to have this in his mind going into the fight your crazy, and his old ass is going to beat the living shit out of Roy and avenge his loss 17 years ago. So while we wait for the fight of the decade between paquiao and Mayweather at least we can watch what would have been the fight of last decade.

Both well past their primes, but I would still wanna watch the executioner blast Jones.

The headline says it all. As a very passive fan, I would watch this over Pack E Owe and Mayweather. At least I can spit both of the aging vets’ nicknames off the top of my head…

I find the pacman vs mayweather matchup to be much more intriguing. Two fighters in their 40s? What is this the UFC? This fight should have happened 10 years ago. Pound for Pound hasn’t been great for at least 5 years now.
