911 in Eugene Goes Down For A Couple Of Minutes. Naturally, People Start To Bitch And Moan

Register Guard. Nobody had to tell Eugene resident Rhonda Jennett what to do when it became clear that her father needed an ambulance on Tuesday morning. “I knew that I needed to dial 911, so I did. And I received a busy signal,” Jennett said. She tried calling from a second phone, then a third — with the same result each time. Frustrated and confused, Jennett then phoned her father’s doctor’s office and explained to a receptionist there that her dad was having trouble breathing and that she could not get through to a 911 call taker.“She said, ‘That’s not possible. 911 can’t be busy. Are you sure you’re dialing it right?’ ” Jennett recalled. A nurse at the office confirmed Jennett’s claim minutes later by making her own futile call to 911. She then summoned an ambulance to Jennett’s father’s home after figuring out that she could contact Central Lane 911 by dialing 541-682-5111 — a nonemergency line for Eugene police and fire services. Jennett said her father remained hospitalized on Tuesday afternoon. “My dad is in (an intensive care unit) but he’s stable,” Jennett said Tuesday afternoon. “I was just so very concerned that somebody else had a different outcome than I did.”
Let me just say that I’m glad this guy didn’t end up dying. There, out of the way. But in a way, not only do I not feel bad they had to go through ‘such an ordeal’, but it’s kind of her fault. Whaa….whaa….I tried to call 911 but it was busy, I couldn’t figure out how to get anymore information…what if someone had died… How come some people just can’t quite get that the interwebs are you friend. Like they know everything. From what’s the longest hitless streak by a player in MLB history, why do Asians love Hello Kitty so much and yes, why aren’t the 911 lines working. The first 100 items I saw yesterday on Facebook and Twitter had to do with the lines being down. Every MFer on my timeline was re-tweeting that shit straight from Central Lane 911′s Twitter account, and re-posting it on The Book. Like, if you didn’t know about the outage, that’s a ‘you problem.’
“This highlights that even though this is a rare situation, perhaps we should educate our public better,” said Pam Collett, interim manager for the Eugene Police Department’s technical services division.
Putting it on the net, TV and radio wasn’t enough? What, gonna send Eugene’s finest out and go door-to-door to alert people? Seriously, if this happened to me and I died because I couldn’t figure out how to get on the internet, you wouldn’t see me bitching up a storm about it. Some people are just stupid, can’t save em all…
