Felix Signing a Sight for Sore Eyes. But Something Doesn’t Add Up.

If this guy wasn't taking the mound every 5th day, the only thing to look forward to watching on this team would be a couple slap hitters. KEVIN FUJII / THE SEATTLE TIMES

When the Mariners inked Felix Hernandez to a 5-year deal last week – or at least it appears to be finalized – I drew a sigh of relief knowing that the M’s wouldn’t be entirely unwatchable for years to come.  That is, unless in the next couple years we find him demanding a trade from a team that sports an offense highlighted by a couple of speedsters at the top and the rest up there hacking like a bunch of 7-8-9 hitters.  But that’s a topic for another day.

On any given night, Felix can be every bit of exciting as the Big Unit was in the mid 90s for Seattle.  The only difference is Griffey, Edgar, A Rod, and Bone are no longer putting asses in the seats and creating a day-to-day buzz around the team (and he doesn’t rock a sick ass mullett).  Felix puts on a show when he pitches: he racks up a lot of Ks, lights up the radar gun, fist pumps on the mound, gets fired up in the dugout, and drops in huge plugs of chaw when he’s pulled.  He even flirts with no-nos from time to time.  Unfortunately, nobody is there to see it.  Having seen him pitch in person 5 times in the past 2 years, the crowds that attend his home outings are pathetic.  None were within 15,000 of selling out.  Not even the fair weather fans that make up Seattle can make it out to see the best pitcher they may get for the next couple DECADES!

This begs the question – why did he sign?  I can’t think of a logical reason.  The M’s can’t offer as much money as other teams, they didn’t fill, and don’t seem to have a plan to fill, their gaping holes in the middle of the lineup, and the stadium is half empty when he pitches.  I don’t get it.  I feel lucky that he has stuck around and I for one will watch Felix deal the shit out of AL lineups, even if I have to listen to Dave Sims and Mike Blowers…

My god he throws across his body. He’s going to have arm problems, the Mariners never should have gave him that extention.

If it doesn’t add up, your math must be wrong. In case you haven’t noticed, the Kingdom imploded years ago along with the absurd hitting numbers. Safeco isn’t a hitters park and never will be. That being the case, why would you build a team around power hitters when your park is not conducive to the long ball? Name one team that doesn’t have a brutal 7,8,9. Do want wins, or do you want to see high scoring losses? In the long-run(162) great pitching and average hitting will trounce great hitting and average pitching. I do have some uncertainty concerning the bullpen, but if they are one of the tops like last year they should be fine. The plan is there, and if executed, should work out for the M’s. Like any plan though it just takes one injury to screw it up.

Every team has crappy 7-9 hitters, but they don’t have 7-9 hitters in spots 3-9. They don’t score runs, that’s why they don’t compete for the playoffs. That’s why they suffer a 5 game skid every other month. The Mariners don’t have to run out guys who drop 35 bombs, but their current look has maybe one guy getting to 20 this year. No gap hitters, no home run hitters, no run producers.

I think resigning Felix is a good move for the M’s. I agree about the lack of offense, good ole Jack better make a move for a big bat by trading deadline if they want to contend. Im not sold on the Bedard move, but he came cheap. They need a LF that can DH with Bradley. Jr will not be the answer at DH for this entire season. If the Dodgers are out of the picture near the deadline, which I believe they will, the M’s should do a dance with the devil and get Manny to spark that offense like he did in LA. I know he is getting old and he a defensive liability, but he can still hit and would provide a solid option at the DH spot in the 4 hole
