The dog days are here.  In the second half of its season baseball is fighting for its relevancy against the power football stories out like Favre retiring for the 5th time, Fat Albert Haynseworth, Revis Island, and Masoli to the SEC.  We devote so many more hours to these rankings they have to be better than ESPN and Yahoo MLB power rankings…

1. Yankees

2. Rays

3. Rangers

4. Padres

5. Red Sox

6. Braves

7. Twins

    Red Sox at 5? WTF?

I figured Kevin Cash, Bill Hall, Daniel Nava, Darnell McDonald and Eric Patterson playing everyday was a good enough reason to almost leave them out of the top 10 completely.

Damnit King…. We need to stop agreeing with one another. This is bullshit. There’s no way that the Red Sox are in the top 10 ahead of the Twins, White Sox, and Reds. Lay of the purple sticky TSB staff!

And King, take it easy on McDonald man. He’s an Aurora, CO boy who’s not playing too shabby for a fill-in until your OF gets healthy….

Apparently the giants are a terrible team in a terrible division that don’t deserve do be even in the top10. Going 20-5 in their last 25 doesn’t mean anything._Sarcasm_

I had them 6th in mine ABR, how the fuck the Phillies are in is a head scratcher.

And the Sox do have a better record than the Twins, White Sox and Reds, for what it’s worth.

Weak sauce calling out “sarcasm” there ABR…

C’mon man, they play well for 1 month against teams that are on the downslide. I would hardly brag that my team swept the Dodgers, D-Backs, and Brewers: won a series against the AWFUL Mets, and split with the Marlins.

Take that weak Giants smack back to your local playground little guy…

You really want to split hairs over 10% points B? Really? That’s the quicksand you’re going to build your argument upon?

Better road record, better record against the best division in baseball. You stick to whatever bullshit you want, I’ll stick to facts. And fuck you for making me defend the Sox.

Easy there King II… You really want to defend a team that just split with the M’s??

The Phils at 10. No chance right now. And it’s just disgusting that an NL West team is that high. Here’s the only thing I’ll say on the Sox. Right now everyone is blowing their load over how good they think the Rangers are and if you look the Sox at 50% due to injury is 1.5 games back of them. So let’s not make the Sox out to be the Mariners right now. If I was a Yankee or Ray fan I would keep an eye on the Sox late.

Anyone who sleeps on the Sox or Yanks in the last two months of the year is an idiot…. Just look at how each season has ended the last decade. Pretty tight battle each year.

Just saying that right now, they’re not 5th best to me…

I like how El Rey and I are the 2 Sox fans and I had them at 7 and he had them just making the top 10. That means we got a lot of closet Sox fans on the site who just don’t want to admit they love the Sox.

    my 2 cents:

The Reds and Cards are fluffed up because the Brewers, Astros, Cubs, Pirates, all suck. And now the Astros are worst in MLB cuz Oswalt and Berkman are gone (more Ws for Cards/Reds).

I had the Phils at 10, nice spot considering the Phils have been battling injuries all season long (boston fan can maybe relate). And just went 7-0 against the NL West without Utley. Philly loses Victorino, adds Oswalt and Brown, waits for Utley to come off DL.

Stats wise, the Padres have the best pitching staff in MLB.

SKI, since you voted the Yanks first you’re a closet Yanks fan?

Every team has injuries, Ski. The weekend series with the Yanks should be the deciding factor. With Youk on the DL though, their chances on a late push got even slimmer. As you’ve said before though, if 3 of their starters can actually pitch like they’re supposed to and put together 3-4 good starts in row, then maybe they can give a charge.

The Astros were the worst team WITH Oswalt and Berkman.

BTW, the team full of leaders(Phils) are 7-8 against the Cubs and Pirates, or teams that suck.

Can I adjust my Phils ranking to #11? Ryan Howard was just put on the DL.

1B will be played now by these super stars: Ross Gload, Cody Ransom and John Mayberry Jr.

    Ugh.

The Sox have been awful for like 6 weeks due to a gruesome collection of injuries. It’s fucking pathetic the Rays and Yanks haven’t completely buried them.

PS-Jacoby Ellsbury is a fucking pussy. But, he’s probably no better than Darnell Mcdonald. So I say he just stays on the DL, like, forever…

  19. Mick

    04. Aug, 2010

Don’t worry Ski, your prayers of seeing the Sox smashed will be answered soon enough…

If you look at the records of the Rays and Yanks you’ll that there’s not a lot more they can do to pull away. They both on pace to win 100 games. Gotta give some credit to the Sox here.

The reason they’re so high on the list is obvious. I’m a Yankee fan and the last team I want them playing in an important series is the Sox (except for the Rays). Teams like the Padres, White Sox, Twins, and Cards don’t really scare me at all, they’re just at the top of their divisions.
One team that certainly would scare me, the Giants and how they didn’t make this list is beyond me.

One series…nice sample size Mick. You are probably the same guy who boasts about someone being on pace to hit 486 homeruns in a season after hitting 3 on opening day.

  22. Mick

    04. Aug, 2010

Breaking out the 486 HR pace sounds pretty desperate B…
Oh, and they’re .500 since the All Star break against mostly average teams… Sounds more like a team that’s middle of the road team struggling to survive to me.

Yeah the Sox haven’t been nearly as impressive as the Reds who are 10-14 in their last 24. And they got nothing on the Twins and their impressive 10 wins against the Ms, Os, KC and Indians.

Listen, I hate the Red Sox as well, but they are ranked appropriately here at The Sports Brewery, home of the most accurate polls in the universe.
