Mariners & Redsox, who’s season is already over?
Posted on 04. May, 2010 at 2:05 am by Stake in Baseball, Boston Red Sox, MLB Baseball, Seattle Mariners
Just one month into the season both the Mariners and Red Sox seasons are in need of repair. The M’s are 3 games under .500 and coming off a sweep at home against the Rangers, in which all three were wasted quality starts. Meanwhile, the Red Sox are also some off a sweep, on the road against the Orioles. The Red Sox aren’t in any position to be giving away games, already 4th in the East, and 2 games under .500. I would be a little surprised to see either one of these teams making the playoffs, but if one had a better chance then the other, I would have to say the M’s do.
Playing in the east doesn’t leave room for error for the Sox. Their offense has been decent, but with no reason to think it will be any more productive. Their pitching will come around, but by then it might be too late. I’m not sure what, if any, moves Boston could make. I suppose Adrian Gonzalez is always being thrown in Red Sox Nation, but that might not be enough.
As the for the most exciting offensive team in the bigs, the Mariners, are in dire need of some run production. Big surprise, I know. I like the swift action to axe Byrnes, who was playing some of the worst baseball I’ve seen at any level. I think Johnson is the next player who should be shown the door though. You can usually give catchers the benefit of the doubt if they are playing good defense, but Johnson isn’t doing either. The M’s need to either bring up some young talent and give them a chance, or make another move for a bat…Dye? Their offense was expected to be futile, but I think current production is even below those expectations. That said, they are just 2.5 games back of first. If this is the worst of the worst, then it can only improve, right? I’m not buying all the Cliff Lee leaving talk that his agent is spewing. If the M’s are out of contention when the All-Star break comes along, then yes, I could see Lee easily being shipped. However, if Lee is playing for the M’s at years end, then he will most likely sign long-term. His agent is using classic negotiating tactics, claim you want the opposite of what you actually want.

Dye to the Mariners makes perfect sense. He says that he won’t play for a shitty team but adding Dye’s bat to the lineup instantly makes the M’s lineup better and in the West that could put the M’s over the top. Shit 4 million for Dye is nothing. They are paying Milton 11 mil and Jack fucking Wilson is making 5. How can the M’s not get him. I agree in that Byrnes is a joke and I don’t know how he still gets playing time. Someone in the organization needs to say something to get this done so at least there will be 1 batter in that feeble lineup where a pitcher might have to think, hey maybe I need to be careful with this guy. Shit I think I could have a quality start against this little league lineup.

Neither. The M’s play in the worst division in baseball. If they can’t mob in that division then they need to serious consider throwing in the towel and trading Felix.
I do not like the Sox, but I do respect talent. They have LOADS of talent on the bump, but have yet to get into any sort of rythm. Even with DIce-K being a zoo, they have three legit starters that are #1′s . Big Pop-Out is definitely on his way out the door, but it’s May 4th man. Plenty of great AL East baseball ahead this year!

Same old song and dance for the Mariners – they can’t hit and do just enough to lose. Having really good players is the key and I don’t see any Jrs (of old), A Rods, Edgars, or Bones getting slotted into the lineup anytime soon. They will have to battle their asses off to win 86-88 this season and maybe that will be enough.
But if this Jermaine talk comes to reality, I’d love that. Add a little pop and a lot of awesomeness to the team, I’m in.

Why not sign the rest of the washed up losers who havent’ signed yet to play for the M’s the year? That’s a great plan. Carlos Delgado, Joe Crede, Gary Sheffield, Darin Erstad, and Khalil Greene are all in need of jobs as well….
Ha Ha Ha!

Or maybe Jason Giambi and Melvin Mora?

Mariners season isn’t over, mostly because they are in a bad division, however if they don’t sign a bat and/or trade cliff lee before the deadline, they will probably be in trouble. It’s really infuriating that the M’s won’t try and sign Dye when in the meantime running out a washed up Griffey and Sweeney. I saw sweeney first pitch swing in the 10th with the bases loaded a week or so ago, double play! Great job. Mariners ended up losing that one. I believe that was the same game the Ms fouled up the Suicide squeeze.

Moron Mick running his mouth again. Jermaine Dye is not washed up. He might not be in his prime, but I assure you he can hit better than Griffey, Sweeney and Byrnes. But yea, lets stick with griffey, his .212 BA and .286 OB% is top quality. God, .286 OB%? CUT HIM NOW.

Yeah same game Tom. Teams who foul up the squeeze generally have to go to class the next morning – they’re not professionals.
The M’s haven’t addressed their big bats in the draft and that’s a huge problem. Instead of taking Morrow, some super tall 19 yr old lefty canadian pitcher, or a USC catcher with their first round draft picks, they should be taking guys who mash and have big upside at the dish. And they did that with Adam Jones, and promptly traded him away the season before his first all star appearance. Another classic example of the front office pulling a string and having it instantly break and snap them right in the face.

Giambi is a zoo. Mora is hitting .300 & still plays solid D. Watch a game before you open your mouth and let more bad smack out.
Tom. The only thing more pathetic than your sports IQ is the fact that you mention me in every 3rd post of yours.
The entire M’s organization from the farm on up is a joke! Worst managed organization in the league by far. Take the best starting pitchers each year, get them hurt, and then back them up with the worst offense in 20 years. Good call on Brynes, why do you think Arizona didn’t want the guy? He’s worthless. Why does Dye not have a home? He’s not worth the money he wants. 2006 was the last year in the sun for that punk.
Oh and Griffey should have retired 5 years ago. What a sad way to end a nice career….

At least the Ms dumped Byrnes today. Softy is talking about Gonzalez or Fielder coming over in a trade, no chance.

Softy also talks about UW contending for the Rose Bowl this year. I guarantee that bandwagon is riding full force late this summer w/ Masoli and Uncle Petey out of the league.
Griffey can stay as long as he wants w/ the M’s. The locals fall for an ex hero and it brings in more attendance and some cash, I’m good w/ that. I just don’t want to see him in the lineup.

Mick, I hate to point out the facts, but your beloved Rockies haven’t been any better then the Mariners in the past 20 years, or 17 years rather. Since their unfortunate beginnings in ’93, the Rockies have had only had 6 seasons finishing above .500, and half of them were only 4 games or fewer above .500. Meanwhile, during that same span, the Mariners had 10 seasons in which they finished above .500. The Rockies have never won a division title, and 9 times have finished more then 15 games back of first. On the other hand, the M’s have won the division 3 times, and only 5 times have they finished more then 15 games out of first.
So say what you want about M’s management, but the fact is the Mariners have been, and will continue to be the better team, both in terms of management and record…. I’ve haven’t been watching the NBA this year. Anyone know how the Nuggets are doing?

M’s the worst organization in baseball, thats a bold statement MIck. Did you not see my post that the Mets are paying Bobby Bonilla for the next 25 years. The Mariners are no where near the bottom of that category. Yeah they can’t bring a legit bat into the organization, but they treat there players and fans good and have good pitching.

You have one of the best young arms in baseball the past 4 years and you have surrounded him with Byrnes, Bradley, and Junior? That’s just awful managing. Yes, the Mets are brutal as well Ski. They have surrounded thier talent with even more average talent than the M’s but pay them 10 times a much. I do love the fact that Bobby Bo is getting paid for 25 years. Good for him for screwing the Mets!
How many World Series trips did the M’s make during that time span?
Rockies made our loney 1
Yanks made 7 including 5 titles
Stake, how about we compare the M’s to Yanks? Oh wait, there is no comparrison because the M’s are always in the tank of the AL. Why not just go back to being a AAA team from Tacoma? Save us all the horror of watching that zoo take the field each night…

You are brutal Mick. Next time we’re debating who’s better between the Nugs and Blazers, I’ll be sure to change the comparison to Lakers or Bulls from the 90′s.

Oh I knew that would get you going! HaHaHaHa!
I know that the M’s had solid teams in the late 1990s and the Rox were no better than .500. Yes, I know we were just awful between 2000-2006. But hey, we’re now a solid team with a solid farm system that is producing talent like no other man. What have the M’s done in the last 7 years except be awful?
The teams that are on the joke level with the M’s also include the Jays, O’s, Indians, Royals, and Pirates.
Enjoy having Griffey bat below the Mendoza line this year!

While I’m sure it was very exciting, 1 world series run doesn’t trump consistant better records. Plus you got swept, would have been different if you actually won.
M’s aren’t anymore of a joke than the Yankees when it comes to front office management. They just don’t have the $250 mill per year to cover up their mistakes.

Actually, I would be willing to bet that the Nintendo money behind the Ms trumps that of Big Stein in the Bronx. Much like the Royals owners (who could buy the Yanks, stadium and Yes network) the Ms chose not to dump a ton of funds into their product.

Accumulated wealth and operating revenue are two different things. While yes, the Nintendo guys may be richer than Big Stein, the Yanks have a ridiculously higher revenue stream and therefore can absorb higher operating cost without losing money. Stein makes money on the Yanks, that wouldn’t be the case for the Ms if they went with a $250MM payroll.

who cares about what the M’s and the Rockies have done in the past, its all about this year and both of those teams have very good chances to make the playoffs. Absolutely no chance to win anything in the playoffs.

I wish Eric Byrnes would be hit by a car.
“On Friday night, he inexplicably pulled his bat back on a botched suicide squeeze in extra innings of a scoreless game. Ichiro Suzuki(notes) was tagged out on the play.
Texas manager Ron Washington was ejected for arguing with plate umpire Jim Wolf that there should have been a strike called on Byrnes on the botched squeeze play. Washington just “could not fathom” that Byrnes pulled the bat back.
Asked if he’d ever seen that in his 39 years of professional baseball, Washington said Friday night: “No, never have. That’s why I couldn’t believe when Jim told me that Eric pulled back on it. Ichiro’s flying down the line, Eric squares the bunt—how can you pull a bat back? But he did.”

Say it isn’t so, Tom and I acutally agree on something? After Brynes shot his mouth off three years ago before the NCLS, the entire town wanted to hang that clown. Then, we he fittingly made the last out to send the Rox to the series it proved that life has a funny way of coming back to haunt you when you’re a dick.

As for the Yanks, I know that there are plenty of owners who have way more money than ‘ole George. The fact is that their team has a much stronger world-wide brand than any other MLB team. Therefore, every dollar invested in the team generates $2-5 in ROI. The M’s could invest in a stronger Asian system since their owner is loaded and the guy lives in Japan. That would one hell of an idea to get them out of the dumper…
How about Bradley and Griffey’s AB’s last night with bases loaded against the Rays? Solid back-to-back strikeouts! Nice effort M’s!

That is awesome that the Texas manager got thrown out because he couldn’t believe Brynes would be that fucking stupid.
