Yeah … we were all there that night we watched SportsCenter.  How could some official blow a call so bad that it took away a historic moment like a perfect game?!

Unbelievable.

It truly was.  The expressions on all the ball players faces told the story.  Even more so when Jim Leyland ran out and chewed on Joyce’s ass like he hadn’t eaten for weeks.

But when the dust settled.

(yeah, i’m agnostic, and i just linked to a biblical scene, go figure)

Jim Joyce showed that being human … wasn’t the worst that could happen at a ballpark.  Joyce got the call wrong, yeah, we all know that by now.  But with him witnessing his wrongdoing just after he saw the replay and admitting it via the media … is heroic.  Jim Joyce is the model for sportsmanship in an era of flopping and diving and faking it … has become almost a standard.

Think about it … next time you watch Derek Fisher do something completely outrageous … or when you watch some Euro dive during the World Cup … how are you gonna feel?

We really need to cut some umps some breaks … or at least the good ones … not the Joe Wests.

These guys bust their assess to bring consistency to our games.

I’m not a big fan of people that rip on officials just for the fun of it … if you have not done it before … then you have no idea.  (damn that sounds very MTV like)

Though Armando Galarraga will never get credit in the MLB record books for a complete game … he will always be remembered in Detroit (dude got a corvette).  He will be the pitcher that had the heart to forgive Jim Joyce for his error.  Yeah, Jim got it wrong that night.  But Jim’s fuck-up, reminded me … and you … that each MLB game is …. just a game.  And fans that have harassed (death threats) an honest ump … like Joyce, who admits he’s wrong the moment he knows it … is the most absurd thing imaginable.

Look in the mirror sub-human-ump-hating Detroit fans.

We are human … why should we hold our sports officials to a higher standard?

Jim Joyce … Armando Galarraga … and a remorseful Jim Leyland … show us that the game of baseball is much more than wins and loses … at least for this one day in MLB history.

Role models were revealed to us all that day.

Too bad that they won’t sell as many jerseys as Manny “PED-non-hustling” Ramirez nor as many as problem child Milton Bradley.  But maybe they’ll be remembered throughout this season as the guys who reminded us all to not take baseball games so serious.  Relax.  Have a beer and a dog.  Enjoy.

Joyce apparently lives close by, maybe I’ll be lucky enough to meet the guy at the local bar and talk some baseball and hear some great stories.  That would certainly be a treat because I know I’ll be getting the honest truth from umpire Jim Joyce.

Now a tangent.

It cracks me up when I hear MLB announcers says that there is a new focus on speed and small ball.  Really?!?!?  Oh gee … maybe because the PED HR hitters aren’t hitting HRs anymore??!?!

In 2010 there has been a lot more speed on the bases than there has been in a long time … mostly because dudes aren’t hitting it out of the ballpark as much as before.  PED players are not running rampant either.  That means slap-hitters in triple-A are getting some play … you know … well rounded dudes that can play ball.

Hmmmm … small-ball … is making a comeback.

Okay, I can’t remember how I was gonna tie in the holy grail to this Jim Joyce piece … I’m still scratching my head … I started this post 2 nights ago … and I’m too lazy right now to update the pic.  I’m human … just like Jim Joyce.
