Ducks beat Dawgs 6-2 in PK Park debut

EUGENE, Ore. – Oregon’s first inning put the Ducks in the driver’s seat as Oregon ushered in its first game at PK Park with a 6-2 victory on Tuesday evening in Eugene.

Oregon (5-4) scored four runs while piling on six hits in the first as Washington (3-4) starter Ben Guidos faced the entire UO batting order in the first inning.

Coupled with another great outing from sophomore right-hander Alex Keudell, Oregon’s first inning held the Ducks’ lead for the following eight innings.

Keudell, now 2-0, tossed seven innings in his first start of the season and held the Huskies to two runs on six hits and three walks.

The Portland native also fell one strikeout shy of matching his career high, fanning six Husky batters.

KC Serna led off the bottom of the first with a single through the left side, and moved to second on Danny Pulfer’s perfectly placed bunt down the third baseline. Jack Marder then executed the sacrifice to put runners on third and second, and Nick Wagner connected on the first hit of his collegiate career with a two-run single that snuck by Jacob Lamb at third down the left field line.

Another Oregon bunt had two runners on with Wagner at second and J.J. Altobelli at first, and Eddie Rodriguez loaded the bases with a single through the left side. Guidos then walked in Oregon’s third run offering ball four to Andrew Mendenhall, and Shawn Peterson drove in the Ducks fourth run to score Altobelli with a single to shallow center.

The Ducks added a fifth run in the third when back-to-back Washington fielding errors put Rodriguez at third and Mendenhall at second for the Ducks. Peterson’s sacrifice fly to right brought Rodriguez home.

Washington began to chip away at Oregon’s lead scoring two in the fourth. The inning started with Pierce Rankin dropping a shallow hit into right that Pulfer, Marder and Peterson converged on. No one could come up with play allowing Rankin to lead off the fourth with a double.

Keduell then walked Chase Anselment, and Caleb Brown was hit by Keudell’s 3-2 offering to load the bases. Lamb’s RBI single to left brought home Rankin for the Huskies first run, and Sean Meehan’s RBI single to center scored Anselment. Keudell then recovered to strike out David Bentrott and coax Andy Smith into a 6-3 double play to end the inning.

Oregon added a run in the seventh when Rodriguez’s RBI single scored Ryan Hambright, after the freshman was given first when he was struck by Washington reliever Jacob Clem. Sitting at second later in the inning, Hambright broke for home on Rodriguez’s single, sliding under the tag.

Joey Housey pitched the final two innings for Oregon, facing the minimum and not allowing a hit or issuing a walk while fanning a career-best three.

Guidos (0-1) took the loss after allowing five runs (four earned) on eight hits and one walk.

Washington committed four errors on the day.

Oregon totaled 10 hits on the day led by Rodriguez’s career-best 3-for-4 outing. Serna (2-for-5) and Pulfer (2-for-5) also had multiple hits games.

Another clash between the Ducks and Dawgs, another win for Oregon.

Be it football, basketball or a sport UO has had back for like 17 minutes–baseball–Washington just can’t compete.

It’s kinda sad really. But, give the pups credit, they know daddy is going to give them a spanking, and they still show up and take it like the redheaded stepchild that they are.

Eat it pups, and oh yeah, Kenny Wheatons gonna score!!!!
