Boxing not dead yet, but on life support

With the collapse of the Maywather/Pacquiao fight it seemed that boxing could officially be taken off life support and pronounced dead, but as watched as my beloved sport of boxing slowly started to drift away I caught a slight heartbeat from the heart monitor. It was faint but it was there and though it’s still alive it will take a lot to bring it back. But there’s a cure. It’s a long shot and it still may not take but at least there is a chance to save boxing.

Right now Manny Pacquiao is scheduled to fight Joshua “Grand Master”  Clottey on March 13th. Now Clottey is no scrub (he’s 35-3 with 20 KO’s) but he is nowhere near the class of Mayweather or Pacquiao. Clottey’s last fight was against Miguel Cotto where he lost a controversial split decision, now even though it was close it was still a loss to Cotto who if people remember was the guy that the Pacman absolutely demolished in November. So if everything goes to plan Pacman will punch a hole in Clottey’s face and stay in people’s minds as the pound for pound best fighter. With this happening I hear that heart monitor beeping a little faster now.

Now Pacquiao crushing Clottey is only half the cure, and at the time I couldn’t figure out what was missing. Then while watching the Aussie Open I saw it on the bottom line. It was announced that Golden Boy Promotions are in negotiations for Mayweather to fight “Sugar” Shane Mosley on May 1. Now for fight fans this was the fight we wanted to see before we got the Mayweather/Pacquiao fever, and when it hit we forgot about the verbal battles that Mosley and Mayweather have had for months. If people remember the Brian Kenny interview with Mayweather it was Kenny saying that Mayweather was ducking Mosley that got Floyd fired up and talking gibberish. So if this fight happens which I suspect it will because these guys aren’t going to turn down this payday, if Mayweather beats Mosley and especially if he beats him easily or by knockout it will certainly set up Mayweather to fight Pacquiao for real this time. With Mayweather getting it done that heart beat picks up a little more for boxing.

This is the tough part to see if boxing will pull through or if it will flat line. So with Pacquiao winning and Mayweather winning it will instantly bring people back to why don’t these guys fight each other. It will be talked about on every sports show and it will be all that we hear about till a decision on the fight is made. Now if this fight gets set and they actually do fight each other not only will it bring boxing back from the dead but it will go down as the biggest fight of all time. On the other hand if this fight doesn’t get set for a number of reasons (can’t agree on fight details, injury or one of them lose) I will be attending the funeral of one of Americas greatest sports. So for the next 5+ months were going to find out if boxing is in the care of Dr Kevorkian or House.

From a casual fan’s(at best) perspective, here’s who most people remember from boxing – Ali, Frasier, Foreman, Tyson, Holyfield, Lewis, etc… ALL heavyweights. I know there have been many famous and exciting non-heavyweights, but if boxing is going to catch the eye of the casual fan there has to be something from that division. And not the Rusky bros. There’s a reason the lighter divisions are not as popular: because everyone knows there are stronger guys out there who would pound the lightweights into submission.

Still, boxing over MMA all day, every day.

Sources close to me (okay, ESPN News) say that Pacquiao v Mayweather is a lock over the summer now.

    PS, Nice ‘House’ reference.
