Weekend in Review:

For what was supposed to be a boring sports weekend this past weekend was actually very solid.  While nothing was as grand as a Super Bowl, there was plenty there for us Northwest sports fans.  Lets review shall we:

Australian Open Finals Part I: Is there a more under appreciated American athlete than Serena Williams?  Serena won her 12th major title, good for a tie for 6th all time, but leaves her 6 off of cracking the top 5.  So why such apathy for Serena? Possibly because it seems like she should have done so much more.  With a body that towers over her competition she always has a major physical advantage over her opponent.  Or maybe because her commitment has always seemed less than what it could or even should be.  Whatever the reason, she doesn’t get the love and respect as most American athletes that dominate their sport do.  She’s put together one of the best careers ever and her best is better than anyone else’s best, ever.

Australian Open Finals Part II:  Has there ever been a more under appreciated athlete than Roger Federer?  Hands down the GOAT he’s now just adding to the legacy.  Again he swat another up-and-comer down like a pesky fly.  Roger dominates so effortlessly and with such grace, class and maturity that he easily gets over looked.  He doesn’t rip cameras from spectators, he‘s notdidn’t used to be on every other commercial and didn’t marry a Swedish nanny so he doesn’t get the love that Tiger gets.  But he hasn’t been caught pumping mad skanks, so he doesn’t get the hate Tiger gets either.  He’s content with having a normal ass Swedish* girl and the sweetest tennis game ever.  A few more titles, and especially if one of them is another French and Fed could make a push as the overall GOAT, regardless of sport.

The Pro-Bowl:  Here’s an idea to liven up the Pro-Bowl.  The winning conference’s Super Bowl representative gets to be the designated home team for the Super Bowl.

/doesn’t give a shit

Ducks Take 2: Ernie Kent lives to see another week, and probably needs to win 4 of his next 10(+) to secure another season and the first in the arena that Ernie built.  For more in game specifics refer back to these two awesome posts.

Andre Miller goes for 52: Epic night for the Portland Trailblazers Andre Miller who went for 52 against Jason Kidd’s rotting corpse and told his haters to Take A Seat.  I know it’s easy to hate the player, but Blazers fans should be hating the management team for bringing Miller in.  He’s not a good fit for this team, and certainly not worth the $7 million per in cap space he’s eating up.  All that being said, Miller has played hard and kept his mouth shut while riding pine to Steve Blake.  Most NBA veterans would cause a major stink if they were signed for big money only to sit behind Steve Blake.

*May or not be Swedish.

Pretty low standards there for Big Ern to keep his job, no?

BTW, OSU and the morgue that is Gill Coliseum, outdrew the Ducks this weekend for the first time since 2004-05. Sounds like a great time to open a 12,000 seat arena with a coach living off of Aaron Brooks’ accomplishments!

Oh I’m not saying he should keep his job, but I bet he does if he gets those wins, especially if it puts them in the NIT.

I think Serena and Roger get their due … it’s just that Tennis is nowhere near the top of the average American’s sports-I-like-to-watch priority list. I’m sure outside of USA they get all the love they could ever need.

And I’m still shocked it didn’t snow after the Miller 52 point drop on Dallas.

Skip Bayless says the Pro Bowl was much more exciting than normal since it’s the “kickoff” instead of the finale. Based on who’s speaking those words, I’m sure it sucked balls.

What’s this “Pro Bowl” that you speak of?

The defense played in the Pro Bowl is a notch above flag football … they should just turn into a flag football game played on a beach … then have the hottest cheerleader from each team on the sidelines in a bikini.
