Championship Sunday Preview & Game Thread

Posted on 24. Jan, 2010 at 11:51 am by in NFL Football

The grind of the football season comes to a close today.  While the Super Bowl still looms ahead for the winners, this is the last game of the grind. The Super Bowl is a completely different experience than a normal game week.  Personally I wish these games were split up between Saturday and Sunday, this is almost too much epicness for one day.  So sit back, grab a cold one and leave your thoughts on the games in comments section.  A quick review of each game after the jump.

Jets @ Colts: On paper this should be a blowout.  Peyton Manning has been in a Zen-like Buddhist state of focus and determination all year with an 69% completion percentage and 4,500 yards in 14.75 games.  He should have no problem reading the blitz and delivering a perfect ball to either Wayne, Garcon, Clark or whomever else that is open.  On the other side of the ball the Colts should be able to stack the line to slow down the run enough to force the Jets into some 3rd and longs where they can unleash their pass rushers and force Sanchise Almighty into making some bad decisions.  3 picks and 2 fumbles sound about right to me.

But I’m a card carrying member of the religion of Karma, and the Karma gods are at going to at least make Indy work for this after the crap they pulled in week 16.  The Karma gods reward the bold and punish the weak.  And Indy showed plenty or weakness in turning down a shot at immortality and what better way to punish them than having them lose to the team they should have knocked out.  They could have gone down as the best team EVAH!!!  How do you not take a shot at that? Especially after your biggest rival of this generation came so close to doing it themselves?  How awesome would it be to show them how it’s really done?  Whatever, bunch of pussies.  The O line is going to miss some blitzes; Manning who had his highest int% (2.9%) since 2002 will be forced into a pick or two.  The Jets are going to have some success with their 3-headed monster at tailback and Sanchise will make a play or two and keep this close.  In the end, Manning will give the Colts a piggyback ride into the Super Bowl.

Colts 17 ~ Jets 16

Vikings @ Saints: For the first time in probably forever, I find myself rooting for Bret Favre.  I’m not quite sure why, maybe I just want to see if the world will explode due to the hype of a Favre v.s. Manning Super Bowl, or even worse a Favre v.s. Jets Super Bowl.  Either way the hype bringing on Armageddon would be interesting to see.  Maybe it’s because I just haven’t bought into the Saints all year, and don’t want to know.  Or possibly it’s just because the Vikings are the better team and would make for a pretty epic match-up against Indy.  All that being said, I’m going with the Saints today for 3 reasons.  First, the Viking have been pedestrian on the road this year, while the Saints have been dominant at home.  Secondly, between the two play-making x-factors, Bush will outplay Harvin.  And lastly,  I trust Payton and Brees  to be on the same page and have a coherent game plan more than I trust Childress and Favre.  The world will be safe for at least one more year.

Saints 31 ~ Vikings 20

Pains me to hear you’re rooting for Favre. As if the football world needs another reason to go ape shit. If the Vikings win, over/under on ESPN analysts ‘gunslinger’ drops by Super Bowl kick off is a cool hundy.

Peyton will probably do what he always does in the playoffs — choke.

Rex Ryan will empty his whole bag of tricks before this one is over.

Garcon is rapidly moving up the 2010 fantasy football charts.

27-17 Colts … I guess Rex Ryan wishes Indy took their starters out when the 4th qtr began …

some of the worst play calling/ decision making i’ve ever seen down the stretch of a game that means this much. seems like neither team wants to win.

Was Favre’s last pass as a Jet a pick? That would be pretty epic if all three teams he played for ended with a pick.
