The Pac10 is screwed!

Uh oh, this Chip Kelly guy can recruit.
Great news for Duck fans, bad news for the rest of the Pac10.
As National “Isn’t it kind of creepy how these grown men are fawning over 17 year old boys” Signing Day came to an end Oregon has landed the #13 ranked class in the nation, according to both Rivals and Scout.com. This is the Ducks highest class since 2007 when Rivals posted them at #11.
Everyone knows that Chip Kelly is the best coach in the Pac10, but who knew that in his 1st round of recruiting as the head guy, he would clean up like he did? Can the Chipster do anything wrong, or is he Midas in a visor?
With the ‘Texas trio’ of Lache Seastrunk (the next Reggie Bush),who runs a 4.35 40, Dontae Williams (210 lbs of bad ass) and the surprise landing of Josh Huff (4.4 guy), the running back position is now officially stacked beyond belief. These guys are so good that US Army All American, Keanon Lowe is now a mere afterthought….
Oregon is doing so well in nabbing greats out of Texas (hello LaMichael James and Darron Thomas) that one wonders if it is now time for Oregon to just join the Big12?
The Ducks were already the best team in the Pac, BEFORE this talented recruiting class. Hell,at this point, I don’t care what happens to Masoli during “Mac-gate.” He could end up in San Quentin for all I care, and the Ducks would still have the most most talented backfield in the league, if not the nation.
Chip Kelly had four words to sum up this class “speed, speed and speed.” Well, I’ve got four more to add:”We’re better than you.”
Here is the complete list of your newest Oregon Ducks:

You would think that for someone who writes columns about the Ducks, you should know–and accurately report–that 1/3 of the “Texas Trio” was not recruited at RB. Huff will be added to the WR core, possibly working at Chip’s “Taser” position.
Still, our RB group is gonna be stacked for some time to come–especially if we can secure Portland’s premiere RB Tyson Coleman (another bruiser at 6′ 2″ & 205 lbs.) who has already committed for the 2011 class.
And, I have to disagree with you that Keanon Lowe is now a mere afterthought…I don’t think CK is looking at him as such. He’ll be another excellent addition to the WR core over the next 4 or 5 years and I expect him to be tearing it up in a couple years with DT,LMJ, Seastrunk, Williams, Diante Jackson, Huff, and all the rest.
And lastly, I do kind of agree with Dave on this one…quite being a pompous ass. Just because we got great talent coming in doesn’t guarantee success on the field…now these guys have to work hard and prove it.

TDucks, you are 100% correct about Huff–he will be placed at receiver.
PS, I’m not cocky, I’m confident….

05. Feb, 2010
TD there is reason to be confident about the Ducks next year and it’s not because of the recruits coming in (Even though getting new talent helps) it’s everyone were returning. And are you really excited about Keanon Lowe playing WR, I’m hoping that they move him to defense where he should thrive as a big athletic DB.
FIGHTON!

Hope you enjoyed your one year in the sun quackers, the Trojans wont be giving the pac10 another gift for about 10 more years.

brewSKI…couldn’t agree with you more about the confidence piece. I’m absolutely confident that Oregon will be atop the Pac-10 come the end of next season and it won’t necessarily be because of the incoming class (although a few guys may have an immediate impact) but instead will be because of what we already have returning. I never alluded to anything in my post that suggested I wasn’t confident so I’m not entirely sure why you are questioning me on that. I merely think there is a difference between being confident and being pompous and arrogant. I maintain my statement that just because we have great talent coming in (and great talent returning) does not automatically translate into success on the field…only hard work and commitment (and staying out of trouble) can do so…and I have complete confidence that CK will make sure that is attained.
As for the Lowe piece…yeah, I AM excited about seeing him as a WR…because that’s where CK recruited him to play and a big part of the reason he de-committed from UW. Do I think he could also be a big time player at DB? Absolutely, but I also think that we’re already more stacked at DB than at WR. I trust that CK will have him play wherever the team needs him most and if that’s WR then I can’t wait to see it.
And to FIGHTON!…all I can say is prove it. The Ducks will once again be flying high while Lane “Violation” Kiffin destroys USC from within… He has yet to prove that he can actually win and I don’t see that trend reversing anytime soon. The good ol’ days of the USC Trojans are over and will be tossed into the trash like any used Trojan rightly should be.
GO DUCKS!!!

TD I agree with you. You can get the best talent to come in but your not going to achieve anything unless you put in the work during practice and offseason. But being a Duck fan as you are it’s new to us to be bringing in these high level of recruits from all around the country so being a little cocky will come with this.
As for the Trojan fan good luck with Kiffin this year. Go ask Tennessee how Kiffin did with his top 10 recruiting class last year. He can’t cut it in the NFL, he couldn’t cut in at Tennessee what makes you think all of a sudden he’s going to be the coaching god at SC. I can’t wait to see how many people jump off the SC bandwagon the next couple of years when they finish middle of the pack.

Give Kinger a break. Sure the rhetoric is a little over the top, but the guy’s writing a column for pity sake. Geez, we’re talking about football not the world peace. So lighten up. Kinger pushes the envelope for the sake of having a little fun…and, hell, arrogant or not, it WAS a fun read.
Frankly, as a consumer of columns, that’s all I ask.

While I am pretty sure Lane Kiffin is no more than a slightly above average head coach, I think it is clear that he can
recruit like crazy, and that cannot be overlooked.
As an aside, I agree 100% with what Roger said. Best comment ever!

Kiffin and the Trojans recruiting class as good a class as they received is in my opinion due to Kiffin being a good hood winker. He reminds me a lot of Dennis Erickson who had built a name for himself that acts like a magnet for the media hype, They ride this big wave that follows them. They stay just long enough that before they are exposed as just another guy and pretty mediocre they are gone to the next party and it starts all over again. And for Kelly we have seen what this offense can do with good athletes and I am exited to see with dynamic athletes what this offense will be like and what ever SC has, will not be enough to stop it; and Oregon is building a dynasty if Kelly keeps this up in the years to come. if our Defense keeps getting better well, it will be sick for the rest of the pac.

Unless Keanon has Mike Haas like route running and catching ability he’ll be at CB. His offensive contribution will be returning kicks. Lets be honest, the Ducks really need to improve their talent on the defensive side of the ball and the only way to do that is by putting impact athletes on the defense.

bbryan….so are you saying that Mathis (CB), Dargan (S), Mitchell (CB), Hill (CB), and Dixon (who was a LB in HS but will likely work at S), and Malone (recruited at LB but could project at S as well) in addition to what we already have returning for a few years (Harris, Boyett, Lewis) is not a pretty solid secondary unit? Have you seen Dargan and Malone in their highlight videos…they both lay some nasty hits….so if they develop and work hard I think these two guys will be lights out for years to come.
I completely agree that our more immediate need is on the defensive side of the ball and that we need to be getting the best athletes there to support what we already have established on Offense. I’m just saying I think we are looking good at DB for a few years. I can’t wait to see a possible secondary of Mathis & Harris (CB’s), Boyett (FS), and Dargan (ROV) with a sufficient amount of depth. Whatever it comes down to, I trust that CK will make the right call and put Lowe wherever he feels he fits best…which for now sounds like WR according to what he said in his press conference….but that could certainly all change.

No one really knows were all the incoming recruits are going to be playing, but I’m more interested in knowing what they are going to do with Barner. They are stacked at running back so I don’t see him being used there and TD says that were stacked at DB so no need there either and with everyone saying that Keanon and Lache are going to do returns but Barner did that to.

06. Feb, 2010
I’m not saying those guys don’t seem to be talented because they do, but I know Lowe can be a difference maker at corner. Hey if he’s a good natural receiver than fine, let him play there. But I don’t want to see him become a project receiver when he would be a impact guy at corner. That’s what he was known for at Jesuit. And it’s rare that a guy who’s known in high school as a defensive stud make the switch at the college level and becomes an offensive stud.
Ski, as for Barner I would keep him at running back. Even if Seastrunk is as good as advertised we could still use 3 reliable runners. We run a shit ton and we know Barner has some skills. As for a return man, whoever doesn’t fumble. I’m so sick of fumbles on special teams.

I actually agree with TD–the Ducks look to be loaded at DB. Harris showed he has the chops to play, Boyett was probably better in coverage as a frosh than Ward ever was, Mathis and Dargin are big recruits. If Lowe is better on that side off the ball, play him there, obviously. Though, I just see him having more value on the offensive side of the ball.
As far a Barner goes, he is electric with the ball in his hands. If the Rose Bowl was a ‘launching point’ for him, things are looking very bright.

All I got to say is that USC will be back on top this year, duck fans enjoy this years title because its going back to LA this year. Barkley in his sophomore campaign will start to turn into the leader that, Palmer and dirty Sanchez were. They have the number 2 recruiting class this year
MIck
11. Feb, 2010
USC may have another legit class of players but they still won’t run with Texas, Florida, and ‘Bama this year. I do hope the Boise and Utah join the PAC-10 so NW crybabies can drop the “no respect” whinning I can hear in Colorado.

Apparently replacing Tebow and McCoy is going to be easy as pie? Makes sense really. Being that everyone knew Timmy was vastly overrated and a mere product of Urbs offense and the athletes that surrounded him.
PS, Mick, BSU won’t join the Pac10 due to their lack of academics. What do you think this is, the Big12?
MIck
11. Feb, 2010
Odd. Pac-10 fan crying about overrated again! Broken record.
Never said replacing two legendary college football players will be easy. Or did I?? No, I didnt. Learn how to read.
Urbs offense is legit. Thanks for the props. Tebow did play a BIG role in making that offense great. Read a stat line man.
You really want to talk about how “highly” academics are regarded in a conference that pays it’s players?
Kinger
11. Feb, 2010
By saying SC wont “run with those teams” you kinda did say it would be ‘easy.”
Shocking that you got gut-hooked by a jab at Tebow, and it only took you a mere 12 seconds to respond. No one with any semblance of a brain could say with a straight face that Timmy Two-Yard wasn’t a really, really good college football player.
As far as academics, dude, of the major conferences, the Pac sits alone, high atop the mountain. Stanford, Cal, USC, UCLA and UW are all extremely elite. In fact, only OSU isn’t a first tier University amongst its Pac10 brethren
Heck, Mizzou wants out of the Big12, in-part, because the academic standards are so low in that conference..
