It’s official: Oregon football is a grease fire

I don’t really know how else to say this–but the University of Oregon football program is out of control, period.
Fan-boys and apologists may not want to see what is crystal clear to the rational observer, but Chip “The Warden” Kelly is running a loose yard, and the inmates are overtaking the place.
I previously found it a tad disconcerting that Kelly hadn’t publicly spoken about the long list of offenses committed by his players, and well, he spoke on Friday.
And now, I wish he hadn’t. For now it makes his words look hollow, weak and perhaps foolish. What’s the saying–’better to not speak and look foolish, than open your mouth and remove all doubt?’ Within two days of his ‘state of the program’ address, we’ve had a DUI and wildly inappropriate Facebook messages in regards to the DUI.
Though, now one of those offending players is gone. No, not the one pulled over under the influence, but the one that publicly questioned his head coach (and why he allows ‘whites’ to be his social networking friends), I guess Kelly is a Myspace guy…
Everyone knows that Chip Kelly can coach, as he already has a Pac10 title on his resume, and before the USS Ducks began to sink, were going to be in everyone’s preseason top-5 heading into next year. But…can he manage the egos, whims and general unpredictability of college football players away from the field? Seemingly, the answer is no. Perhaps this is an aberration, and more of a coincidence in timing, than it is a general trend or pattern that the program is imploding.
We shall see.
But all we know for now, is that if you are good enough, Kelly will let the facts play themselves out. If you are a walk-on or a mercurial receiver with 17 career catches, you will be dismissed from the program by the end of the day.
The immediate direction the program takes from this moment will depend on not the consistency of the message, but on the consistency of Kelly and the Universities actions.
Right now, off the field, the Ducks look about as consistent as their offense on January 1st in Pasadena.

At least you have one good thing to look Duck fan, you’re getting some solid national hype. You’re getting some really bad press, but hey, no press is bad press right???
WAR Oregon cancelling the 2010 campaign due to their entire roster being in the Eugene City jail… Uh-Oh!

Maybe Kelly should have just handed out half-game suspensions?
