Chip Kelly vs John Canzano Reaction

Chip Kelly was on The Bald Face Truth today and absolutely crushed John Canzano.  Canzano was doing what he does, trying to stir up trouble, but Chip Kelly was having none of it. Here are some of the highlights.

After Canzano accused Kelly of not suspending good players: Kelly said, “I suspended a star running back (LeGarrette Blount) for 8 games when the NCAA rule is 1.”  “What part of that does not make sense?”

On why LaMichael James hasn’t been suspended Kelly said, “When a player gets in trouble I meet with them and they tell me what went on, or what didn’t go on and I act upon it.” And followed with, “I think in the United States of America it would prudent to get all the facts” In which Canzano responds, “That’s where we disagree.”

After Canzano asked, “What would the harm be in suspending him (LaMichael James)?”  Kelly responded, “The harm is I believe my player.” “Do you think I am going to symbolically make decisions to satisfy John Canzano?”

Later Canzano got in a nice cheap shot, “You have the same problem that (ex UNLV coach Jerry) Tarkanian had.”

After Kelly called out Canzano by saying, “I think you love doing this stuff,” the show quickly deteriorated to the point that Canzano started asking about what would Kelly’s parents do.  The interview ended with this nice exchange:

CK “My parents wouldn’t punish me without getting the facts first”

JC “Mine would.”

CK “Well maybe your parents didn’t believe in you.”

My thoughts on the interview: Canzano was all over the place.  He hammered away about Kelly’s apparent lack of discipline for 10 minutes and then later accused him of having 20-30 players that are afraid of him because he’s too harsh. That does not compute.  Canzano also had a hard time understanding that James has told Kelly he’s not guilty and Kelly backs his player up, just like any coach would.  It will be interesting to see how the James story plays out because clearly Kelly believes James is innocent.

bryan i have to disagree with that last sentence. i don’t think chip kelly believes that james is completely innocent i just think he is trying to give his player the benefit of the doubt.

fun fact #1: this kind of stuff didn’t happen when the cougs went to the rose bowl in ’03

I’m so frustrated!! I’m trying to still load the interview!! From what i’m hearing though, as usual Conzano is such a toolbox and this interview just proved how he really is just doing what ever he can to stir up controversy. At this time more then ever the Ducks need our support!! What ever comes out of this, I still think Chip is the man and we have a great team because he’s such a great coach in all aspects of the definition of the word “Coach”
    !! Go Ducks!!

Bryan-Man, way to bring out the truth about the Cougs “spotless” Rose Bowl team. The truth is, no team and no person is without their flaws. Throwing stones at others and making them out to be evil is always a good way to expose and put your own dark side on display for all to see.

I guess too there is the hope that in making another program out to be “entirely evil” in some way leads to the mistaken notion that in comparison, yours is better, and somehow stands a better chance of winning the next time they line up. We tell our kids that is “stinking thinking” and will get you no where in life.

As one good man said, “Judge not…lest you be judged”

That’s a great point Chuck, all programs have these problems. And the ones that don’t have an even bigger problem, they don’t win football games!

Johnny boy got wrecked by Chipper yesterday. In 20 minutes his line of questioning went down one road and when Chip gave a legitimate answer, John couldn’t fire back w/ a decent retort. I would love to hear/see footage of John interviewing Bob Knight in that manner. If it ever happened that must have been a one-sided blood bath.

I don’t see what Johns issue is with Coach waiting…it’s pretty simple.
There is no favoritism…Kelly has a player who is claiming innocence and there is no evidence to the contrary that he has access to to make an educated decision regarding LMJ. The police are not going to hand over evidence just so he can make his decision. In regard to Kiko, a DUII is in most cases and certainly in this case, “cut and dry” 1. did you blow over a .02 (minimal requirement for a minor unlike .08 for an adult) answer – YES COACH… Done! No more info needed. In a major case like LMJ the coach has no access to info other than talking to LMJ. If the kid says he was defending himself, or something that could lead to his being found innocent, what can you do. Especially if the kid is one of the nicest, most respectful, most adored kids in the entire program and the allegations are completely out of character, unlike the issues with Embry or Holland.

Ripped from PAC-10 Insider Ken Goe:

In fact, the Ducks’ list of three misdemeanor assault charges and a DUII citation are small potatoes compared to what has happened elsewhere in the Pacific-10 Conference in the past 10 years.

    • * In 2000, star University of Washington linebacker Jeremiah Pharms robbed, then shot a guy who had sold him drugs. The bullet just missed the drug dealer’s liver. That was the marquee incident, but at least 14 UW members of the 2000 team that played in the Rose Bowl were accused of crimes including hit-and-run, animal cruelty, punching a security guard, DUII, attacking a fraternity, sexual assault, vandalizing automobiles, domestic violence, assaulting a parking attendant.
    • * In 2002, four UCLA players were charged with assault and a fifth dismissed from the team for fighting. And that followed a season in which the quarterback had two drunken driving beefs and the star running back was suspended for violating NCAA extra benefit rules.
    • * In 2004, an Arizona State tailback was suspended for accepting extra benefits, another for slugging a teammate. In the spring of 2005, fresh from being reinstated, running back Loren Wade shot and killed former a former ASU player outside a Scottsdale, Ariz. nightclub. He was convicted of second-degree murder.
    • * In 2005, Oregon State players had a litany of problems, from an accusations of assault on a national guardsmen, to trying to pay cab fare with marijuana, to a driving drunk with a stolen sheep in the back of a pickup, to providing alcohol to a minor who died of binge drinking.
    • * In an 18-month period in 2005 and 2006, at least 25 Washington State players were arrested or charged with a criminal offense. In one, a star linebacker broke into an apartment and clubbed one of the residents with a frying pan, fracturing his cheekbone. In another, a player soaked a teamamte’s contact lenses in rubbing alcohol after a dispute over an unpaid cable television bill.

Ken Goe is as big of an ass hat as Clownzana, ripped from Ken Goe’s article a couple of days ago:

“I think John Canzano was spot-on with the column he wrote for this morning’s Oregonian.

Canzano called out Oregon coach Chip Kelly, who simply must get control of his football team.”

Canzano is a douche. Plain and simple. Chip doesnt have to explain any of his actions to some no talent wannabe reporter.
