Heisman Trophy 2010: place your bets!

It is almost that time of the year. The time when college football analysts begin yapping about this year’s star players and their chance to bring home the big bronze dude. Besides, I thought I’d sneak in a little football chatter before the NBA free agency storm hits.

Last year’s winner Mark Ingram is the obvious odds on fave to win again. And I’m sure he’ll be going back to NYC as a finalist simply because Alabama is gonna be kickin ass again this fall.

So who is gonna emerge in 2010 to swipe the prize away from the front-running Ingram?

I very much like a QB this season. You got the 2 PAC-10 guys (still the PAC-10 until 2012) Locker and Luck. Jacory Harris in Miami is due for a big year. You know Casey Keenum and Kellen Moore will drop big numbers on their stat sheets, especially because of their competition. And I just don’t know much about highly-rated Ryan Mallett of Arkansas, didn’t follow any Razorback games last fall.

As much as I’d like to think LaMichael James has a chance of getting an invite to the prestigious NYC ceremony, it just isn’t gonna happen.  Not in a season with a potential QB controversy hanging over the Ducks offense each week.

Oh yeah, let’s not forget about that big kid in Ohio State, uh what’s his name … oh, Terrelle Pryor. Mr. Pryor decided to play up to his potential in January’s Rose Bowl game to the dismay of Oregon’s defense. I’m sure Mr. Pryor will play with a lot more confidence in 2010. But I don’t see him grabbing the trophy, mostly because he is not gonna go thru the schedule without a real turd or two of a game.

My money is on Stanford’s Andrew Luck.  Without workhorse Toby Gerhart around stealing passing plays away from the gunslinger anymore, I think the kid could put up some killer numbers this fall.

No more jabber, let’s go to the odds from Vegas:

Player Position School Line
Mark Ingram Running back Alabama +380
Terrelle Pryor Quarterback Ohio State +550
Jake Locker Quarterback Washington +800
Ryan Mallett Quarterback Arkansas +1200
Noel Devine Running back West Virginia +1400
Jacory Harris Quarterback Miami +1400
Dion Lewis Running back Pittsburgh +1500
Case Keenum Quarterback Houston +1500
John Clay Running back Wisconsin +1500
Evan Royster Running back Penn State +1500
Kellen Moore Quarterback Boise State +1700
Landry Jones Quarterback Oklahoma +1800
Andrew Luck Quarterback Stanford +1800
DeMarco Murray Running back Oklahoma +1800
Christian Ponder Quarterback Florida State +1800
Damien Berry Running back Miami +2200
Matt Barkley Quarterback USC +2200
Jacquizz Rodgers Running back Oregon State +2500
Garrett Gilbert Quarterback Texas +3000
LaMichael James Running back Oregon +3300
Tate Forcier Quarterback Michigan +3500
Josh Nesbitt Quarterback Georgia Tech +6000
Jerrod Johnson Quarterback Texas A&M +6000
Blaine Gabbert Quarterback Missouri +6600
Jordan Todman Running back Connecticut +6600
Robert Griffin Quarterback Baylor +6600

    It’s Pryor’s to lose.

Ingram was a marginal choice last year, unless he tops 2,200 yards for an undefeated Bama squad, no way he goes back-to-back.

Jake Locker has no prayer to win it. He doesn’t have the weapons to put up gawdy numbers. He doesn’t have the team to win enough games to put him in contention. I’ll take the Husky RB from 3,000 miles away over Peasant Jake.

Agree on Locker. Unless ESPN’s Gameday Live camps out in Seattle for the month of November, he ain’t got a shot.

I like Miami’s Jacory Harris to at least get the invite to NYC. He will have the weapons that Locker won’t.

I think Evan Royster from PSU has a great chance to win it. PSU will be running the ball a lot this year and Royster will get the bulk of carries. He could make a run at 2000.

what’s more brutal, the pre season rankings or the pre season Heisman candidates? I guess I’ll go with the rankings as more brutal. Regardless there is no reason at all to be picking a Heisman winner on June 28th.

I agree it is silly, but anything football is a nice diversion.

I agree with that as well. Gotta be something going on that we can talk about besides the AL destroying the NL…again.

This is also important info for those of us who are trying to make a buck or two on the Heisman. I’m sad to say that I am no longer one of those guys.
