The NFL is again a joke, yet continues to be a great “product” when 2 of the main story lines each week have been Tebow related or what team can and will finish the worst in the league. There are of course many others, but both of those dominate each week. Then there’s the NBA, or there was the NBA. Damn.

Since the mainstream American sports are sub-par, turn to the French. Not soccer, but Remi, the guy who brought you Real Life Mario Kart amongst others.

She has virtually no chance to catch Steffi Graff at 22 majors (Serena’s at 13) and doesn’t appear to be very concerned with playing enough of the small tournaments to be ranked #1. Yet, Serena is widely accepted as having the best “A-game” of all-time. She’d beat anybody at her best – Graf, Navratilova, Venus, and Seles included.

Thus, what she does from now until retirement will not push her career very far in any direction. In fact, her outrageous explosions towards an umpire two years ago at the US Open and four days ago in this years final indicate to me she’s lost every reason to keep a mental edge against her opponents (both blow ups were instrumental in her losses). So it begs the question, what shall she do with her career?

JOIN. THE. MEN’S. TOUR.

Serena’s got nothing to lose. She’s on the back end of her career. Her legacy in the women’s game is in-tact. She is clearly bored as can be (not sure “stepping on a piece of glass” at a Wimbledon dinner event should keep you out nearly 6 months).

There are people like Michael Wilbon who think she’d be in the top 20-30 of the men’s game. I’ve heard tennis pros say she’d be in the top 50. Personally I believe she’d have a hard time ranking in the top 100.

But I’d love to see it happen. Serena could throw a world-wide shit fit to get a mass of men and women behind her, and eventually the ATP tour would cave. Or hell, they may welcome her with open arms. As much of a golden age as men’s tennis is in right now, it could use much more popularity. Especially in the US. And especially the non-major events.

It would be at least an 18 month commitment, a major spectacle, and quite possibly a train wreck. But it would be a lot of fun to see as a fan.

(so would this)

And no less important a day for American tennis. Assuming the 60-70% chance of rain doesn’t cancel another day of matches, here’s what I’m looking forward to today:

Donald Young v. Andy Murray

Classic nothing-to-lose match for DY. This is his deepest run in a major and he’s going up against a top 5 player. He’s still young in tennis years, fast around the court, a crafty lefty, and looks a lot cooler than most tennis players, especially his opponent today. If Donald was more polished I would love to see this as the night match as the crowd would be behind him and all over the Scot, but that might work against him in such a big match…and Fed v. Tsonga isn’t a bad 2nd choice either.

Roger Federer v. Jo-Wilfried Tsonga

No American here, but none needed. It’s a rematch of a quarterfinal at Wimbledon this year, when Fed was blown off the court after winning the first 2 sets. Really any match with Fed is great to watch, and I don’t expect this one to disappoint. Both guys play with power and play to the crowd, perfect for the night session in New York.

John Isner v. Gilles Simon

At 6’9″, Isner is awesome to watch serve. He has to be thrilled to have avoided a top 10 player at this point in the tournament and if Isner can take out the Frenchie he would take on the DY/Murray winner. A great opportunity to play in the US Open semis.

Andy Roddick v. David Ferrer

This year has the feeling of one last hurrah for Roddick. His ranking is plummeting and noticeably losing his weapons. A win over Ferrer – something I do not expect to happen – would likely run Roddick into Nadal in the quarters. Roddick v. Nadal has US Open night match written all over it (the best atmosphere in tennis), and unfortunately for Roddick has blow out written all over it as well. But hey, his wife still has huge bombs:

Man Alex Morgan is really trying to keep women’s soccer relevant. If she’s not out flaunting her hotness she’s banging home no look goals like it’s no thing. The only problem is that while she’s working towards promoting women’s soccer the rest of the league seems to be working against her. I mean pink jerseys and pink balls? Come on ladies you can do better than that.

I’m not saying that I started this whole Alex Morgan craze, but let’s be honest here I did. Nobody knew who this broad was going into the World Cup and nobody except me knew about her even after the 1st game. If you don’t believe me check it out and judge for yourself. I was all over her and she only played 5 minuets in the game.

SKI the star maker. You better believe it.

Who does this Euro think he is? He comes across the pond to play on our turf and he pulls this showboating shit. Hey guy this is America we fucking invented showboating, so take that weak ass Euro shit and jog on. This has to be the worst effort of showboating ever right? I mean it looked like he was barely even trying to do it, whatever the fuck he was trying to do. Poor grades all around for this guy.

Also who in the world would have guessed that his name was Mario Balotelli? Seriously Mario Balotelli, I couldn’t believe it.

I was expecting to see this when I heard that name

Not this

Sad thing is the fat white Mario probably would have given a better effort here then the black Mario.

I would like to point out that I recently posted an entry about how I felt the USA women tanked hard and should’ve been ripped for an epic chokejob – but nobody seemed willing to do it. Then Kinger felt the need to tear me apart for saying that second place doesn’t get remembered. So I started to think, does second place really get remembered? Does falling just a bit short truly leave an indelible mark in the minds of fans? The answer is quite simply – yes. But for what? Is that a moment the losers are glad to have? I’m sure Jim Kelly is ecstatic when he gets asked how it felt to lose three SB’s in a row? He’s been asked that question more times than there is a countable number to describe it, and every time he hears it he is brought back to just how he felt after those losses. So sure Kinger, you’re right. The USA soccer team will be remembered…for being a favorite in a tournament they didn’t win. A tournament that they should have been out of against Brazil. And an epic fail in the final against a lower-rate Japanese side, in which they led not once but twice – and managed to fold the tent so quickly on the penalty kicks the announcers barely had time to assimilate that the US women just got DOMINATED by the moment. Ian Darke, the Brit announcer ESPN had doing the games with Julie Foudy, nearly stuttered a few times trying to describe the mess he was witnessing. So great, I hope you remember every player and every through ball from that game because honestly, after a performance like that I’d be embarrassed to say I just went out and represented my country on the pitch.

P.s. Just wanted to get it out there on record that still no memebers of the media have openly ripped the USA for the choke, and if they did Hope Solo was quick to come out and say “anyone who thinks we choked obviously doesn’t know anything about soccer.” I know enough to know that what I was watching was pathetic. So it isn’t quite so obvious, I guess.

Honestly, I wasn’t going to write anything more about the USA women’s team – I felt like it had been covered, we got the gist, we all felt bad. But I started to think about the game, which I watched every second of, and I started to wonder why everyone on the planet is letting Team USA off of the hook. Because Japan was a great story after the terrible devastation of the earthquakes over there? Because the Japanese were an average height of 5′ 4″? Flat out garbage if you ask me. Our girls pretty much dominated the game, very rarely finishing their golden opportunities, and letting down like scared little girls when the game was on the line. Take the first three penalty kick takers for the United States – Shannon Boxx, Carly Lloyd, and Tobin Heath. All three of those women stepped up to the line looking like it was the last place they wanted to be. Absolutely overmatched by the moment, and it clearly showed in the lackluster, wet-blanket strikes they sent towards the Japanese keeper. The fourth kick taker, venerated striker and team leader Abby Wambach, steps up and shows she is absolutely not scared, and SMASHES a ball into the back of the net. In short, our women got a lead in the extra time and settled in to play complacent, robotic football – leading to an awful set piece goal in which every defender seemed to be back on their heels, allowing the veteran Japanese striker to put a boot to the ball and flick it on past Solo for the goal. Our women flat out choked on the biggest stage in women’s football/soccer, and nobody seems to be holding them accountable. The moment the words “they let it slip away” or “they gave it away” comes out of someone’s mouth – it is immediately followed by “second place in the world isn’t bad” or “well they were so close” and “they battled so hard all tournament.” Give it up! Last time I checked, nobody remembers the second place team and how hard they played. Nobody will remember the goal against Brazil either now.
