We get most of our information from Twitter as Oregon doesn’t announce their letters of intent until Chip Kelly has a press conference whenever he damn-well feels like. Pretty run of the mill for Chip.

The media love him.

The question marks remaining are wide receiver Bralon Addison, a current Texas A&M commit, athlete Bryan Harper, wide receiver Thomas Johnson, a Texas decommit, wide receiver Chance Allen, a current Oklahoma State commit, and whomever else Oregon went after under the radar.

The experts are predicting Johnson goes to Texas A&M, while Oregon has the slight edge for the other three.

Stay tuned to this thread to see if Oregon receives faxes from those guys along with everyone else currently committed.

As the day goes on we will move the commits up to the signee area. Those are the kids who we confirmed (one way or another) sent in their faxes.

Update: Addison and Allen both signed with Oregon.

Update: Only remaining targets (that we know of) for Oregon are Harper and WR Julian Brooks, who is visiting this Friday.

Update: Harper signed with Arizona. Still just Brooks and possibly some more walk-ons to go along with former Sheldon two-star linebacker Dawson Housley.

As I’m sure you’ve already heard, Pleasant Grove High School lineman Arik Armstead committed to play football and basketball in Eugene.

Armstead puts a cap on (so to speak) what was already a solid class, especially at the defensive line position, which is where it’s expected he’ll begin when he arrives in Eugene. I say that because several outlets rate him as one of the top offensive tackle prospects in the nation, while others rate him similarly at defensive line.

Either way he’ll challenge to play immediately. His best chance at that is probably at defense end in the void left by Terrell Turner, but with his size it’s safe to assume he could play defensive tackle too.

Arik Armstead with his parents at his announcement today. Photo from Dan Greenspan's Twitter

I can’t remember who the last guy to play basketball and football at Oregon is, but … oh yeah, it’s Jordan Kent.

“Hey, did you know that Jordan Kent was a letter winner in three sports when he attended the University of Oregon?” said every play-by-play guy on every broadcast Jordan Kent ever played on.

Armstead is also a two-star power forward on ESPN.com, which should tell you he has pretty good feet. That athleticism would serve him well on offense, but Oregon recruited the offensive line extremely well last year and defensive line is a more likely place Armstead could play next year.

He already graduated high school and said he plans to enroll at the UO in March for Spring practices.

The only reason, it seems, that Armstead is going to Oregon is because Tosh Lupoi got hired by Washington after the Cal board of directors denied Jeff Tedford’s application to get him a raise. He was a very solid Cal commit up until that point. Obviously Washington isn’t enough of a draw for Lupoi to keep his grasp on Armstead, despite Washington sending seven coaches out in their last in-home visit last week.

It was reported that Chip Kelly and Jim Mora Jr. were the only coaches who didn’t use negative recruiting, and that Kelly was honest and up front about things, including his own shaky future in Eugene.

Some players appreciate that kind of thing. Armstead’s father, Gus, said Arik is clearly one of those.

The only question remaining is whether Armstead’s buddy Shaq Thompson flips from Cal to Oregon as well. Both of them discussed going to the same school for a long time, but the change at Cal probably changed that. The thing to watch for is that Thompson is a lot more connected to Lupoi than Armstead, so the experts expect Thompson to follow Lupoi to Seattle, despite him still being a solid commit to Cal.

Obviously — getting back to Armstead — a commitment is a lot different than a signed letter of intent, so we’ll see if he actually sends it Oregon’s way.

Stay tuned, I guess. All will be answered Wednesday.

By the way, the plan, as we did last year, is to have our SIGNING DAY SPECTACULAAAAAAAAAAR, where we’ll update the LsOI as they’re reported on Twitter. Remember, Oregon doesn’t announce their signees until a mid-day press conference, so the best anyone can do is pay attention to Matt Prehm, Justin Hopkins, Greg Biggins, and Chris Courtney and whoever else reports that stuff for Oregon on Twitter. Or you can follow our thread on Wednesday because we’ll do it for you.

Some of them literally.

Pharaoh Brown, a six-foot-seven 230-pound tight end/defensive end from Ohio, committed to Oregon this week after decommitting from Michigan in November.

Jared Shanker of ESPN.com breaks down his story and decision here.

The gist of it is that Brown played defensive end and quarterback during his junior year and had committed to Michigan to play defense. Then, Oregon offered him a scholarship in May as a tight end even though he had never played the position. Well, he started playing it during his senior year and loved it so much that he only wanted to be recruited at the position. Then, he took his official visit to Oregon (the only official visit he took) in November and decommitted from Michigan, which brings us to where we are now.

Oregon offered Pharaoh Brown from Brush High School in Lyndhurst, OH a scholarship at tight end despite him not having played the position before his senior year. He rewarded them by committing. Photo from 247sports.com

Don’t be surprised if he ends up playing defense at Oregon because he’s a top-15 prospect on both sides of the ball. He was a top prospect on defense coming into his senior year and has since been deemed one at tight end as well. He did say; however, that offense was why he committed to Oregon for what it’s worth.

He finished 2011 with 32 catches for 753 yards and 10 touchdowns on offense and 47 tackles and 12 sacks on defense.

High class problems.

In addition to Brown Oregon got a couple more giants to man the lines in Kyle Long (son of Howie) and Stetzon Bair (brother of Brandon,) both from the junior college ranks.

Long is a six-foot-seven 290-pound offensive tackle from Saddleback College in Virginia. He graduated from high school as one of the top prospects in the country but elected to play baseball at Florida State when the Chicago White Sox drafted him. Then he basically boned himself with a DUII and horrible grades, so he has spent the last couple years working his way back.

Dale Newton does a nice background piece here.

He only has one year to play one at Oregon, so don’t get used to him being around long, but with Mark Asper and Darrion Weems graduating offensive tackle is a spot of immediate need. Expect him to start opposite Jake Fisher next year, assuming he doesn’t drink all his scholarship money in the meantime.

Bair is the brother of recently graduated defensive lineman Brandon Bair, and, like his brother, went on a Mormon mission for a couple years before working his was back into football and transferring to Oregon. Also like his brother he plays defensive line and is a monster. He also went to the same junior college as redshirting defensive tackle Jared Ebert.

He’s listed at six-foot-nine 260 pounds and has four years to play three, so expect him to add some pounds on a play inside. He’s 21 years old now, so by the time he graduates you can pretty much expect a monster of a human with tons of leadership on the defensive line, especially if he’s anything like his brother.

Here’s a video from December 22 by Rob Moseley and Adam Jude from the Register-Guard which features Matt Prehm from Duck Territory. He’s way smarter and informed than I am about this stuff, so listen to him. On a side note, the R-G Postgame Brew is so much quality it’s ridiculous. Had to put that out there. It’s really good. Also, Moseley needs a cheeseburger. Okay, I’m done.
It should tide things over for a while. It isn’t even December yet.”

Well, since that last post Oregon got commitments from four dudes worth posting about.

Let’s start on offense; works chronologically that way too.

Byron Marshall: stud. Dwayne Stanford: stud.

Now on to defense. Reggie Daniels: stud.

As is the case with most of these guys, I could spout about how great they are until Mike Riley wins a conference title, but the tape doesn’t lie, so watch it.

Oregon now has three U.S. Army All-Americans committed, so there’s also that.

I should also note that Thomas Tyner, one of the best running backs in the 2013 class, committed too, but he isn’t rated anywhere and his signing day is forever from now. Just know that he’s faster than DeAnthony Thomas and 6-foot 200 pounds. Also know that Marshall is a top ten running back in this year’s class, so don’t look for Oregon’s running game to slow down anytime soon.

Kinger mentioned to me last week that there was somedumbbitch on Twitter squawking about how Oregon is struggling in recruiting for the 2012 class. It was during Washington week, so all matter of logic and reasoning usually go out the window, but I figure it couldn’t hurt to give a refresher on the guys Oregon has commits from, and what’s been going on since my post about Jeff Lockie a long-ass time ago.

Look, Oregon isn’t in the top five in the country for recruiting. It never will be simply because it’s Oregon — the state, not the school. Getting good players, most of which reside east of The Rockies, is never going to be a consistent thing because Eugene is small, wet, and cold. I live in Eugene and love it to death, but we’re talking about elite athletes who want to go out and do things a big city has to offer, and if that’s not possible at least get some sun while being bored. Eugene (and the entire state of Oregon for that matter) has neither of those.

Oregon’s draw since Chip Kelly took over has clearly been its coaches. Uniforms, Nike and facilities are nice, but Chip Kelly, Scott Frost, Steve Greatwood, Gary Campbell, etc. have a reputation for turning marginal kids into superstars on Saturdays. Higher rated athletes now see that and think, “Shit, I could win a Heisman and peace-out after three years. Works for me.” De’Anthony Thomas, anyone? That’s why they had success recruiting great athletes last year, and that’s why they will continue to as long as those guys are around.

But that said, it takes more than that to get a lot of five star kids out to Eugene. So you have to figure Oregon will get its one five star a year, surround him with a bunch of four stars, support them with a lot of three stars, get a couple unrated kids and be super happy about all of it. It’s pretty obvious the coaches are really good at getting the most out of kids, and can put them in the best position possible to be successful. Jeff Maehl and Kenjon Barner are great examples. Both started on defense and switched to offense out of necessity and then killed it. The coaches know what they’re doing, and while star ratings are nice, all they really tell you is what certain Web sites think of players. Most of the time they’re right. A lot of the time they’re not.

*hops off soap box

Oregon has a solid class so far. Let’s not get it twisted. And the cool thing about it is that they’re keeping most of the really good Oregon recruits in state. Since my last post, Oregon got a commitment from Brett Bafaro, a four-star linebacker from Liberty High School in Hillsboro. He joins U.S. Army All-American defensive end Alex Balducci from Central Catholic and three-star athlete Oshay Dunmore from Newport as three of the best recruits Oregon high school football has to offer, who chose to join The Ducks. That never used to happen, and the quality of player has never been as good as it’s been in the last few years.

A lot was been made over the last few years that Oregon wasn’t keeping those higher rated local guys around as Owamagbe Odighizuwa chose UCLA and Gabe King (not really local, but he went to South Eugene for one year) went to Cal. But that same year, Oregon kept Keanon Lowe and Curtis White, and the following year got Colt Lyerla and Tyson Coleman on board. Oregon high school football is a lot better than it used to be, and there are superstars coming out of the state. Oregon is already the favorite for 2013 running back Thomas Tyner. He’s listed at No. 8 overall on 247sports.com, and he’s widely regarded as the best running back the state has ever had. He ran a 10.35 100m as a sophomore. It’s the fastest a Oregon high school athlete has ever run. Think about it like this: he’s faster than De’Anthony Thomas, but is 6-foot 210 pounds. Wow. His only downside is he’s injury-prone. AH-CurtisWhite-EM! Stay tuned on that one. There’s still a really long time until his signing day, but with LMJ and Barner gone at that point it seems like Oregon would be a perfect fit, inevitable NCAA punishment aside.

Anyway, here’s who Oregon has commits from so far.

Enjoy. You should.

With Rocklin, Calif. and ESPN “The Opening” 7on7 quarterback Jake Rodrigues already in the mix, Oregon added a second signal caller to the fold Thursday with a commitment from Danville, Calif. quarterback Jeff Lockie, according to Chris Courtney of eDuck.

Lockie, from Monte Vista High School, is listed as a pro-style quarterback by those who list those sorts of things, but is very athletic and looks to be a good fit for what Oregon likes to (at the very least show that it can) do athletically at the position.

He runs a 4.68 40-yard dash, according to Scout.com and chose Oregon over an offer from San Diego State. He was recruited by Mark Helfrich, according to Rivals.com

Oregon quarterback commit Jeff Lockie running the ball against De La Salle. Photo from the Monte Vista Mustangs' Web site.

Lockie led the Mustangs to a 8-4 record last year as a junior and said in an interview with Ben Enos of the Silicon Valley Mercury-News that he had his eye on Oregon for a while.

“My brother goes there,” Lockie said. “The relationship with the coaches and the offensive setup was the right fit for me.”

It’s obviously still very early in the recruiting process for 2012 players — hell, the high school season hasn’t even started yet — so take all of Oregon’s commits right now with that grain of salt. The same goes for any team, but especially Oregon with Lylegate looming.

However, Lockie told Enos that the possibility of NCAA sanctions down the road doesn’t matter to him.

“We’re not going to worry about that,” Lockie said. “If that’s the place I want to be, then that’s the place I want to be.”

Lockie threw for 2,449 yards and 26 TDs with just nine INTs last season. He also rushed for 205 yards on 57 carries, scoring six times.

As Brandon Oliver of 247sports.com said earlier today, Oregon already has a very solid base to its 2012 class and now just needs to add the Mambas and — ahem — Seastrunks to put them over the top.

However, don’t hold your breath on any big-name commitments until the NCAA figures out what it wants to do with Oregon. But figure that as long as Chip Kelly is still around, Oregon will end up with another huge class.

This is one die hard Duck fan that is actually not at all incensed by this Willie Lyles business; instead I am quite happy that Oregon understands the gray area in college football and how to use it to their advantage. In the current landscape of major BCS college football if you are not getting in with the so called “street agents” you are not getting recruits, period. The Lyles recruiting service package may or may not be a little over priced but no NCAA violations occurred and absolutely nothing about the service was illegal at the time of purchase. Hell and in my eyes LMJ, a Heisman Trophy finalist, two Pac 10 Championships and a trip to the BCS National Title game was well worth the twenty-five grand, so it wasn’t even overpriced.

Hey Oregon fan and specifically The Clown, if you want a nationally relevant football program in today’s landscape this is the gray area that you must live in. Note how The Clown even says nothing will happen in terms of NCAA punishment, instead this will just cause the NCAA to create new outlandish and outdated bylaws instead of focusing on the fundamental problems of the current system.

“We’ll soon find out whether the NCAA can prove if Oregon did something major wrong. The guess here is that there will be some wrist slapping and new mandates as they relate to scouting services. But I’m convinced that what matters more is your reaction in the interim.”

As The Clown continues, he insists Oregon fans should should be outraged by all of this and must hold their program to a higher standard and make Chip Kelly and the Athletic Department be accountable at all costs.

“Will you demand better from Oregon? Will you stop making donations and buying season tickets until you know the Ducks are operating with clean hands? Will you inform Oregon that the standards will always apply as long as you’re around? If so, do it now. Do it loudly. And do it in a way that counts. Because if you sit idly by and serve as an apologist for the UO, you’re part of the problem. And right now, the university is acting like it’s doubtful the average fan cares enough to make a stand.”

Get off your F*cking high horse and descend from Mount Pious your pompous F*CK! They found a damn gray area, it’s where you have to live to be an even remotely successful program. Shit if you aint cheatin, you aint tryin that is the motto of SEC county, how are those programs doing these days? Do you think Alabama, Auburn, LSU and Florida don’t each pay out more money and to thirty of these supposed rip off services each? Even more importantly, do you think their fan bases and local media honks even give two shits about them? It is what is needed to win, and honestly that is what I care about. If I wanted to watch white “Student-Athletes” parade on a football field showing off the fine virtues of college athletics, I would drive two hours up the road on Saturdays and watch the Linfield Wildcats. I don’t, why, because I want to see one of the best Division I programs in the nation rush for 300 yards every week and shred USC, UDub, and OSU.

In fact I am going to bring this a little closer to home, considering I do have some first-hand knowledge of the sport at the collegiate level. Let us examine our beloved Oregon track and field program. They have had international athletes on the team we can all agree on this, yes? Do any of you high horse honks have any clue how these highly talented runners get to Eugene, Oregon from Zaire (I pulled that country out of my ass as I have no idea if we have ever had anyone from Zaire at the U of O). It is through, hold on for dramatic pause, recruiting services which can be much, much, much more expensive than $25,000. They cost a few thousand for the basic package, which consists of nothing more than a list of athletes with their performances and their contact information. Which, if you ever have had to deal with them you would know, is nothing more than that specific handler’s phone number and email address, what you aren’t getting what you paid for? When you do contact them about your interest in one of their athletes it gets even more expensive, they require an additional fee to subscribe to their advanced service, in which they get you into contact with athletes they feel are appropriate for your program. So why isn’t the NCAA investigating every athletic program in the nation that has signed international athletes? Answer, because it is not a violation of the rules.

It happens every day at every program across the nation, get used to it. NCAA athletics is an archaic broken system and if you do not live within the gray area you are a .500 irrelevant program. Personally, I prefer being one of the top in the nation, so please Coach Kelly keep Mr. Lyles and his services so we can get the next LMJ.

Oregon football picked up commitments from Eric and Stephen Amoako, twin defensive backs from Martin High School in Arlington, TX, according to Tony DiFrancisco of Duck Sports Authority.

Each brother received an offer last week and committed today, but the commitments aren’t official until they visit campus, per Chip Kelly’s policy.

Brent Zook from DSA spoke to their high school coach, Bob Wager, who said each brother runs a 4.5 40-yard dash and can bench over 300.

Eric is listed at safety and Stephen at cornerback. Wager classifies them as athletes. Neither played offense for the Warriors last season.

The brothers also had offers from Oklahoma State, Pitt and Kansas State.

Each brother also competes in track and field for Martin. Eric finished fifth in the high jump and helped his 4 X 100m relay team to a sixth place finish and the 4 X 400m team to fourth place at the UIL District 4-5A Championships. Stephen was also on the 4 X 100m team and made the finals in the high jump.

Eric Amoako, Safety, 5’11″ 190 lbs. Martin High School (TX)

2010: Defense: 59 tackles, two sacks, three INTs, three pass deflections, two fumble recoveries, one fumble recovery for 61-yard TD, one forced fumble.

Stephen Amoako, Cornerback, 6’0″ 190 lbs. Martin High School (TX)

2010: Defense: 26 tackles, one INT for 81-yard TD, six pass deflections, one fumble recovery.

The Amoako twins make Oregon’s third and fourth commitments for the 2012 class, in addition to defensive back Oshay Dunmore, who committed during Oregon’s Junior Day and tight end Evan Baylis, who committed last week.

Baylis is a rangy tight end from Aurora, CO. He runs a 4.8 40-yard dash, according to Rivals. He also has offers from Boise City, Arizona, Michigan, and Stanford among many others.

You might be asking yourself, “Why would Oregon need another tight end? Don’t they already have Colt Lyerla, Curtis White and Christian French?”

Well, not to point out the elephant in the room, but here’s the elephant in the room: White is basically always going to be injured. That would leave Oregon with Lyerla and French. Both are studs, but a team needs more than two tight ends on the roster, and Baylis look very capable.

Also, if White for some reason isn’t injured all the time, French and Lyerla are obviously incredibly versatile athletes who can move around to both sides of the ball. There’s nothing wrong with having a wealth of weapons, which, if Baylis eventually signs, Oregon definitely will have.

Evan Baylis, Tight End, 6’5″ 220 lbs. Grandview High School (CO)

2010: Offense: Receiving: 22 catches, 298 yards, five TDs. Rushing: six carries, 25 yards.

Also, according to Justin Hopkins of 247sports.com, Trey Griffey and his father, Ken Griffey Jr., will be in Eugene for a visit sometime soon.

Trey will play wide receiver for Dr. Phillips High School next season after transferring from West Orange High School in Orlando, FL. in January. He’s actually a big-time recruit and would be a massive get for the 2012 class.

Oregon has star-power, son!
