Canzano: “Carlesimo would put Oregon on the map again”
Posted on 09. Mar, 2010 at 10:27 am by Meerkat in Basketball, NCAA Basketball, Oregon Ducks Basketball, PAC-10 Basketball
Where there’s smoke, inevitably, there is fire.
Should we all assume Ernie Kent is a lame duck coach? A guy who is gonna summon up some last minute coaching heroics to try and push his team into a PAC-10 Championship appearance. A guy that yearns to cast doubt into all the reports that he has already been let go.
But let’s keep it real.
The heavy smoke billowing from Eugene suggests the hunt has now begun for a new hoops coach. A coach, most likely, with some twinkle. So selling seats at the new Matthew Knight Arena will be a lot easier.
So who is on Bellotti’s list?
Mark Few?
Steve Lavin?
Maybe. But apparently, P.J. Carlesimo IS on it. That is what John Canzano is reporting today.
Canzano:
An athletic department source told The Oregonian that Carlesimo was on the short list of candidates to replace Ernie Kent.
And Canzano likes the choice … and frankly, I do as well. I would rather have Mark Few take the job first, but if Few isn’t leaving Spokane, then I’d love Carlesimo as the guy. Okay, so PJ was an average NBA coach, so what … he won’t be coaching in the NBA. Some guys are better suited for the NCAA game. And if chosen, I’m hoping PJ is that kind of guy. From what I remember, the only time Seton Hall was ever relevant was when PJ was there. The guy somehow convinced foreign players to come play in NJ. And if my memory serves me right, there was some Aussie kid the Pirates had who was a rifleman from 3-land. How do you get a kid from Australia to play at Seton Hall? So I’ll go out on a limb and say PJ has some recruiting skills (or least his assistants did). Oh, he also had this kid named Terry Dehere play for him as well … a 2-guard that could hit from anywhere on the floor. If PJ can draw some Dehere-types into Eugene, that would be sweet … like maybe, Sweet-16 sweet.
I’m hoping Canzano is right on this one … because I like this pairing of Oregon/Nike and PJ Carlesimo.
Let’s roll out some numbers and facts …
NBA
Overall: 203 – 284
Playoffs: 3 – 9
| Year | Team | Season | Playoffs |
| 1994 | POR | 44 – 38 | 0 – 3 |
| 1995 | POR | 44 – 38 | 2 – 3 |
| 1996 | POR | 49 – 33 | 1 – 3 |
| 1997 | GSW | 19 – 63 | 0 – 0 |
| 1998 | GSW | 21 – 29 | 0 – 0 |
| 1999 | GSW | 6 – 21 | 0 – 0 |
| 2007 | SEA | 20 – 62 | 0 – 0 |
| 2008 | OKC | 1 – 13 | 0 – 0 |
(from databasebasketball.com)
From shu.edu:
P.J. Carlesimo was men’s head basketball coach at Seton Hall for 12 years, from 1982 to 1994. He led the Pirates to their first NCAA Tournament in 1988, and a total of six NCAA appearances in his final seven years at Seton Hall. Carlesimo was named NCAA Coach of the Year in 1989 after his squad finished a surprising 31-7 and advanced to the NCAA Championship Game. In addition, he was named Big East Coach of the Year in both 1988 and 1989.
By the way … the PAC-10 tournament begins Wednesday …
8pm – Oregon vs Washington State.
Let’s see how much fight Ernie has left.

Ernie’s got nothing left cause he never had anything in the first place.
Oregon should not hire PJ. Find someone better.

Nice. Both Majerus and PJ took their teams to the ncaa championship game and lost.
Majerus = PJ
But I’m willing to bet Oregon/Nike don’t wanna bank their future on Rick’s flakiness.

Clownzano also said that the ducks wouldn’t make a bowl game while sitting at 2-1, he’s called for Mike Reilly to be fired, claims 25-30 of chips kids are scared of him and that 3 ducks have been arrested for assaulting women when it’s really only 2. And that’s just off The top of my head. He males for good target practice, but don’t believe anything he says. He’s just there to stir the pot.

Also don’t forget black people hate PJ, not a good thing when all the best players are back. Other teams will hammer what happened with Spree on the recruiting end.

I don’t see how the Spre incident would damper recruiting for PJ.
Would Robinson or Howland say to a recruit … “Well you can’t choke PJ, but maybe I’ll let you choke me once in awhile.”
Latrell Sprewell was one of, if not the, biggest punks/thugs to ever lace up a pair of NBA shoes.

“The athletic department told the Oregonian…”
Wow Canzano, and anyone who listened to the Fan yesterday would have heard the KVAL jackass who released this news tell how he had an insider who told him of this news. AND HE SAID THIS ON THE RADIO 2 HOURS BEFORE JC’S ARTICLE POSTED ON THE NET.
More exciting breaking news from John John: PJ has a sweet beard.
Me: PJ wouldn’t be my first choice, but he has a plenty big name to bring on board. Hook it up.

You got to look at it from a young urban kids eyes, not a 30 year old white guys eyes. We all know spree is a punk who can’t feed his kids on 14 million. But the first thing people think of when the name PJ is said is that incident. And if you don’t think howland and Co won’t remind kids what happened you’re crazy.
I have a bad feeling Oregon is going to fuck this up. Something else no one talks about is if you bring in a big money coach you better be ready to give chipper a big raise too. Can’t have the basketball coach making more than the football coach if you are a football school.

If a young urban kid with NBA desires has PJ come to his living room, will any other PAC-10 coach have a better play than this …
PJ:
“Son, I’ve coached in the NBA and led an NCAA team to the Championship … if you’re a one-and-done player … shouldn’t you play for me in our new arena?”
Besides, high school seniors were 6 yrs-old when the Sprewell choke went down.

I’m now on the Steve Lavin bandwagon after reading this post from a Bob Clark blog:
Robbie G,
Overall record is 145-78
I’m glad my persistence is finally paying off and my call for hire Steve Lavin is starting to get some pub. I think he would be great for a few reasons:
1) Has won at the Pac-10 level already.
2) Deep runs in the tourney (and not the NIT), 5 Sweet Sixteens (one Elite Eight) in 7 seasons, my mind says that’s about 71% of the time…the calculator says 71.4%. Only missed the tourney once as a coach. He also won a national championship as an assistant to Jim Harrick.
3) Popularity. He is currently a college basketball celebrity because of his work with ESPN/ABC. He also goes in depth with the X’s and O’s better than most I have seen on any of the networks (opinion, I know, but others would likely agree). This is huge when you are trying to sell 12,500 seats each game. Plus, he’s popular with the Pit Crew already.
4) Only one sub-.500 season, all other seasons came with at least 21 wins.
5) 4 wins over the #1 team.
6) Twice had the #1 recruiting class.
7) Pac-10 record is 81-48.
9) All this while head coach at the university of all universities when it comes to college basketball.
Almost forgot, one last thing about Lavin, he’s already coached in a situation where the fans put unrealistic expectations on him.

I’m starting to come around on Lavin a little bit. His laid back persona would fit Eugene pretty well, and he’s well known and liked.
The down side is he’s basically a white Ernie Kent. His results weren’t that great considering he was at UCLA.
I also think we could get him on the cheap compared to some of the other names that are being thrown out there. I know selling tickets is a big deal at the new arena, but at what point does all the extra money spent towards getting a new coach outweigh the additional tickets a new coach can bring in? This could cost the Athletic Department 2-3 million more per year than just keeping Kent. Basically Oregon better get this one right.

Here’s a sampling of better play’s around the Pac-10 than PJ’s run to the championship game 20 years ago:
Howland – 3 straight final fours, numerous lottery players, oh and I coach at UCLA.
Montgomery – Numerous lottery picks, was just as crappy as PJ in the NBA.
Dawkins – Any player that is good enough to play Pac-10 ball and smart enough to go to Stanford will never choose Oregon over Stanford, this is academic.
Robama – Obama is nailing my sister
Kent – 2 elite 8 runs and 4 lottery picks since PJ was chocked out

I have been on the Lavs bandwagon since the Pit Crew handed him a signed placard wishing him well after he was fired from UCLA and he took it stride (I just didn’t think it would take this long for Ern to get canned). The guy is the shit, as Ski has previously preached.
PS, Kent has had 3 lottery picks, not 4. Aaron Brooks was picked like 27th.

Bry- your right with what the other Pac10 coaches will, or should say to recruits. Problem is most kids(recruits) are f’n morons and care more about perks and stupid shit associated with the program rather than what a coach’s history is; unless its a coach K, Roy, Calepari. The Pac10 hasn’t seen a coach like that since Wooden though.
bbryan
10. Mar, 2010
Ski – It’s all about the presentation. What good is a vision if you can’t sell it to people?
El Rey (/makes wanking motion) – Thanks for the correction. For some reason I always consider him a lottery pick. Probably because he’s been the only player from Oregon that has been any good since Brandon.

My Wish List
1. Knight – Bring him in for 4 years, hire a coach in waiting then after Knight Bows out you have a solid young coach in the wings.
2. Chris Collins – Assistant at Duke. He is young and intense. Coach K -esque
3. Brad Stevens – Butler head coach. This guy is a manchild coach. Look at what he has done with Butler – 4 straight NCAA touny invites wins the horizen every year. Bring him in.
4. Lavin
