David Stern Trying to Keep the NBA in the News

With the NFL just flat out rolling over all other major sports with a 3 day long (2 in primetime) draft coverage, David Stern had to throw a little something out there as only he can.

From Yahoo:

Los Angeles Lakers coach Phil Jackson believes commissioner David Stern’s threat of harsher punishments for comments critical of NBA referees was a “heavy-handed” way to deal with what he called “gamesmanship” by coaches in the playoffs.

Stern issued a “make my day” warning to the league’s players and coaches while doling out a round of fines to players and coaches on the Orlando Magic and Boston Celtics on Thursday. Jackson has been fined $35,000 twice this month, most recently for commenting about the fouls called against players guarding Oklahoma City’s Kevin Durant(notes), who led the NBA in free throws this season.

Stern has to be a little mad that the NFL draft is completely dominating the NBA playoffs.  Oh wait, the NFL does that to the MLB playoffs too – and to every other sport/TV entertainment in its way.  At least this wasn’t in the middle of the conference finals or, God forbid, the NBA finals.  Stern would flip a lid.  He might pull out his lawyer tricks and literally sue Roger Goodell.

I dig the comments, though.  Anytime a short, white headed, old man tells the world’s greatest athletes to “make my day”, you got to laugh at that.
