Did Doc Rivers Take a Leap of Faith?

A fairly bold move by Doc Rivers yesterday, as he agreed to “give it one more try with this group.”

The only problem is “this group” isn’t exactly that group right now.  A few questions still lie ahead for 2 of the starting 5 for the Boston Celtics.  One of which is Paul Pierce – an oft despised fella on this site (rightfully so) and around much of the basketball world (also rightfully so).  Pierce opted out of his contract yesterday to check out the 2010 NBA free agent waters.  It’s highly likely he will come back to the Celtics, and this has the look of just wanting to get an extended deal now instead of at the end of next year.

Ray Allen is also on the open market as of now.  Of course, Boston is the front runner to re-sign Allen, but you never know what can happen there.  He would be a pretty good fit in one of these many ‘package deals’ that include LeBron or Wade and Bosh or Amare.  Could you imagine the Nets signing Allen, LeBron, and Bosh or Amare?  They immediately become the front runner in the East.

Point being, Doc put his faith in both of these guys coming back.  If either guy is gone next season, they had better sign another free agent or else they are not making a run at the Finals again.  It took an exceptional effort from all their pieces to push LA to game 7 this season.  And it will take another perfect storm to make that push again.

Doc chose one more title chase (for now) over the time off he says he’s been wanting to spend with family.  He very well could have got verbals behind close doors from Allen and Pierce that they are coming back, but for his sake I wish it was more of a sure thing.
